Backups are one of the most important, and often neglected task of home users. We recently ran a 5 part series, Options for Home Computer Backup. My current backup plan involves a Windows Home Server, online backup of photos (SmugMug), and a portable USB hard drive for notebook backup while traveling.

Our free computer help forums often have posts from people desperate to save their digital memories, because they lack adequate backups. Whether it’s a hardware failure, malware infection, or human error, protect your digital treasures with adequate backups. Seagate presents attractive options, and their 5-year warranty ensures peace of mind.

Update: We have a winner!

I don't really backup, although I do use ADrive for my rarely used files, Dropbox, and burned DVDs. Most of my files I uploaded to MegaUpload and MediaFire so there's not too much I can't redownload.

I usually back up my important files on two other drives. If I want a more permanent solution I burn the files to a DVD or a CD depending on the size of the files or purpose of the backup.

I have backups all over the place! Backups of backups. Backups of files I no longer need backed up. (Does that count as a "backup"?)

I burn CDs and DVDs with important data as they are added to the computer, and make complete images onto an external USB hard drive.

I sure would like one that connects to the network, though. ;)

I was lucky for now (knocking on wood) and when my HDD failed several times I always was able to recover it’s content with some recovery software (even after formatting it!)…

I now bought a TabletPC and when i try to synchronize most of my improtant data between my PC/TPC/WM phone with Live Mesh and Dropbox I periodically have some data on my TPC which arent synchronized. Most of them are work related and it would be really bad if I lost them which is quite easy as normal notebook HDDs fail quite often and SSDs are too expensive as of now :(

Q: How do you backup your important data?

A: Currently, I don't have a big enough hard drive to make a system restore point each month. But I backup all of my word/excel/PPT docs to my 1GB flash drive. Everything else (music/pictures/videos) is backed up to DVD's.

backing up files is so important. usually i backups my files by the following methods.

1.- collecting same type of files in the same storage device. an example, all photos, all music, all dloaded movies, DVD, should be stored separately.

    2.- using online storages.

3.- once a month, I create a system restore point.

    4.- using a flash drive.

5.- installing a "reboot to restore software" like deep freeze. it really counts to have this installed. and if you wonder how i save data with my system frozen, heres what I do:
i only freeze the drive C not, not Drive D. so i only need to scan and backup the files in drive D bcoz its the drive that is vulnerable.

Q: How do You backup your Important Data?

A: I backup my Mail, Documents, Music, and other personal files, my Linux backups and my favorites and other important files. I do this every couple of months, and I use a Seagate 160 Gig external Drive. I learned from experience that you should backup files as necessary, and keep that backup current. This way, if there is a problem, and I lose something, or I have to reformat, I can keep my backups from both machines on one drive. Would LOVE another drive for additional backup capacity however!!

I'm ashamed to say that as of right now I do not have a backup system. We were just talking about having to start looking into backing up our files. Would love to win this. Thanks for this giveaway.

My current backup consists of a three-layer system. My main computer consists of a tablet and I usually carry with me a portable harddrive (actually it's my old laptop drive that I replaced and bought an enclosure for it) to which I frequently backup my documents and pictures. At least once a week I synchronize all my documents and pics to my old desktop computer drive (which pretty much just works as a kind of NAS). Then every couple of months I make DVD backups of all the important stuff, label them with the date, file them and hope I'll never need them.

When the motherboard in my older sister's laptop overheated and fried (from leaving it on a bed while turned on, which I warned her would do that), I took it apart and salvaged what I could from it...including a 2.5" 80GB IDE HDD. After that, all that was left for me to do was buy a USB External HDD Enclosure for like $10 and voila! Instant backup drive.

I use Norton 360 (version 1) to semi-automatically backup all the files and folders I deem important. It's very convenient and it's saved my butt numerous times over. It automatically starts backing up new files whenever the computer is idle for about 30 minutes.

I wouldn't recommend using N360 v2, however, as it backs up your files into compressed, unreadable files which can't be restored unless you use N360 v2 to do it, whereas v1 just stores the files whole, and with the same folder scheme they were initially in.

My backup plan is that i just back up what i can not get back. I use 2 8 gb flash drives which are with me every where i go. The second is box.net i upload all my pictures and different files there. I also get most of my pictures printed and then burn a dvd/cd (size dep) whit all the pictures from that shoot. Those then go in to an album with the dvd/cd encase i need to reprint them ever. Would love the external HD would make life a lot more efficient.

2 drives, 3 partitions, all backed up to an external drive weekly on different days. C:\ on Mondays, F:\ on Tuesdays, P:\ on Wednesdays. Eventually I plan on backing up important files, such as school work, to a remote location, just in case my drive here fries /me knocks on wood ;)

One of the drives would be going to another computer in the house to back that one up, with the being used to expand my computer's backup solution.

Depending on the importance of data, they are being backed up to different media or to multiple media.

Data that's being modified regularly are backed up to a thumbdrive.

Data which aren't expected to change (such as PDF files) are backed up to an external hard disk (a Seagate 80GB external HDD). If they are important, these files will also be copied to another computer.

Very important files will be backed up to a thumbdrive, an external hard disk, copied to another computer and uploaded to an online file hosting service (Mediafire).

I have the best intentions when it comes to backing up my data and have been known to copy my files onto CD (or floppies back in the dark ages). It would be nice to have a better way, though, as well as the motivation to get it done before something catastrophic happens to my hard drive -- which wouldn't be the first time!
