Backups are one of the most important, and often neglected task of home users. We recently ran a 5 part series, Options for Home Computer Backup. My current backup plan involves a Windows Home Server, online backup of photos (SmugMug), and a portable USB hard drive for notebook backup while traveling.
Our free computer help forums often have posts from people desperate to save their digital memories, because they lack adequate backups. Whether it’s a hardware failure, malware infection, or human error, protect your digital treasures with adequate backups. Seagate presents attractive options, and their 5-year warranty ensures peace of mind.
Update: We have a winner!

I have backups all over the place! Backups of backups. Backups of files I no longer need backed up. (Does that count as a "backup"?)
I burn CDs and DVDs with important data as they are added to the computer, and make complete images onto an external USB hard drive.
I sure would like one that connects to the network, though.

I was lucky for now (knocking on wood) and when my HDD failed several times I always was able to recover it’s content with some recovery software (even after formatting it!)…
I now bought a TabletPC and when i try to synchronize most of my improtant data between my PC/TPC/WM phone with Live Mesh and Dropbox I periodically have some data on my TPC which arent synchronized. Most of them are work related and it would be really bad if I lost them which is quite easy as normal notebook HDDs fail quite often and SSDs are too expensive as of now

Q: How do you backup your important data?
A: Currently, I don't have a big enough hard drive to make a system restore point each month. But I backup all of my word/excel/PPT docs to my 1GB flash drive. Everything else (music/pictures/videos) is backed up to DVD's.

backing up files is so important. usually i backups my files by the following methods.
1.- collecting same type of files in the same storage device. an example, all photos, all music, all dloaded movies, DVD, should be stored separately.
2.- using online storages.
3.- once a month, I create a system restore point.
4.- using a flash drive.
5.- installing a "reboot to restore software" like deep freeze. it really counts to have this installed. and if you wonder how i save data with my system frozen, heres what I do:
i only freeze the drive C not, not Drive D. so i only need to scan and backup the files in drive D bcoz its the drive that is vulnerable.

Q: How do You backup your Important Data?
A: I backup my Mail, Documents, Music, and other personal files, my Linux backups and my favorites and other important files. I do this every couple of months, and I use a Seagate 160 Gig external Drive. I learned from experience that you should backup files as necessary, and keep that backup current. This way, if there is a problem, and I lose something, or I have to reformat, I can keep my backups from both machines on one drive. Would LOVE another drive for additional backup capacity however!!

My current backup consists of a three-layer system. My main computer consists of a tablet and I usually carry with me a portable harddrive (actually it's my old laptop drive that I replaced and bought an enclosure for it) to which I frequently backup my documents and pictures. At least once a week I synchronize all my documents and pics to my old desktop computer drive (which pretty much just works as a kind of NAS). Then every couple of months I make DVD backups of all the important stuff, label them with the date, file them and hope I'll never need them.

When the motherboard in my older sister's laptop overheated and fried (from leaving it on a bed while turned on, which I warned her would do that), I took it apart and salvaged what I could from it...including a 2.5" 80GB IDE HDD. After that, all that was left for me to do was buy a USB External HDD Enclosure for like $10 and voila! Instant backup drive.
I use Norton 360 (version 1) to semi-automatically backup all the files and folders I deem important. It's very convenient and it's saved my butt numerous times over. It automatically starts backing up new files whenever the computer is idle for about 30 minutes.
I wouldn't recommend using N360 v2, however, as it backs up your files into compressed, unreadable files which can't be restored unless you use N360 v2 to do it, whereas v1 just stores the files whole, and with the same folder scheme they were initially in.

2 drives, 3 partitions, all backed up to an external drive weekly on different days. C:\ on Mondays, F:\ on Tuesdays, P:\ on Wednesdays. Eventually I plan on backing up important files, such as school work, to a remote location, just in case my drive here fries /me knocks on wood
One of the drives would be going to another computer in the house to back that one up, with the being used to expand my computer's backup solution.

Data which aren't expected to change (such as PDF files) are backed up to an external hard disk (a Seagate 80GB external HDD). If they are important, these files will also be copied to another computer.
Very important files will be backed up to a thumbdrive, an external hard disk, copied to another computer and uploaded to an online file hosting service (Mediafire).

I have the best intentions when it comes to backing up my data and have been known to copy my files onto CD (or floppies back in the dark ages). It would be nice to have a better way, though, as well as the motivation to get it done before something catastrophic happens to my hard drive -- which wouldn't be the first time!

This worked for a while, but the cheap external cd burner I bought a few years ago has since stopped working, so I am actually in the market for an external drive

Okay.. To be honest, I'm a mobile person.. I travel a lot.. I have a laptop that already full with data (my hard disk is only 40gb).. And I depend on my 8gb thumbdrive, and DVDs for back-ups..
I have loads of documents that I used in my daily life and most of it is stored inside the 8gb pendrive acting as my keychain.. That's include all the tools that I need to do logs at Geekstogo! I have to do some cleanup to my thumbdrive weekly.. Well, you can figure it out..
Most of my pics and movies are cramped out inside my laptop, and the most important memories and data are burned in the DVD.. I have loads of DVDs that stays in my laptop bag all the time.. I would like to transfer all my pictures and data to a single huge external back-up storage.. That would helped me a lot and will make my life easier..
So, long story short.. I either use my 8gb thumbdrive (for documents) or DVDs (pictures and movies) as my backup storage..

I used to use DVDs but they took forever and I always let it slip, so I've moved to a hard drive only methodology.
My backup system now consists of a 3-layer defense-in-depth strategy.
1st level: I have a RAID 10 array in my PC (performance + redundancy but at higher cost).
2nd level: As I have a home network I have scheduled the following batch file to be run by the Administrator account at 4am every Tuesday morning.
Copy C:\BackupLog.txt D:\BackupLog.txt
LogOff 0
LogOff 1
LogOff 2
ChkDsk D: /x >C:\BackupLog.txt
Xcopy D:\My_Documents \\Evil-K8NS\Share_Data\Kurt_Docs /d /e /v /y >>C:\BackupLog.txt
Xcopy "C:\Documents and Settings\Kurt\Application Data\Mozilla" \\Evil-K8NS\Share_Data\Kurt_Mozilla /d /e /v /y >>C:\BackupLog.txt
Defrag C: >>C:\BackupLog.txt
Defrag D: >>C:\BackupLog.txt
"%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SpybotSD.exe" /taskbarhide /autoupdate /autoimmunize /autocheck /autofix /autoclose >>C:\BackupLog.txt
3rd level: I have an additional 1TB drive that I bring home from work and update once a month on the day before patch Wednesday.

keith said,

My current backup plan is this:
Firstly, a prayer to merciful Minerva that nothing will ever go wrong with my laptop and that it will never get stolen or damaged, despite the amount of travelling I do.
Secondly, if anything should ever go wrong, God forbid, I would check that all my music and photos are still on A-drive, where I deposited them for free several months ago and then completely forgot about. I would, of course, lose anything added to my laptop since I uploaded them, but there you go.
Thirdly, I would root out the DVDs to which I copied the same music and photos, just in case. I'm pretty sure I backed them up properly...Once again, anything added in the past half year would be lost.
So, I think I have most of the things that I would hate to lose backed up, even if it is in a rather half-arsed fashion. Whether I still have the registration numbers for various software I'm running, I couldn't say for sure. Either way, it would be annoying to have to search out and download the relevant software that it has taken me a while to put together from various free offers. (I wonder where those registration numbers are?)
If I had a genuinely safe backup I would, for the first time in my life, do a Dell System Restore. I think I have accumulated so much trash over the years, both in the registry and everywhere else, that the thought of having my laptop back to its pristine condition is really very attractive. This time I would know how to look after it from the get-go, not like when I first got it. Until now I have never dared try a system restore, just in case something goes horribly wrong, A-Drive goes bust on the same day and my backup DVDs turn out to contain only error messages.
More than anything, having an external drive big enough to take not only a copy of the contents of my own laptop, but also perhaps a copy of my mum's and girlfriend's computers as well, would make me feel less nervous about my amateurish attempts to make either of them load in less than 20 minutes on startup.

It was a little disappointing. Now, I keep all of my pictures and important documents on my hard drive as well as thumb drives. This would go a long ways toward solving the problem of trying to figure out what files are on what thumb drive. I could put it all in one place.

I use a combination of online backup (Mozy, eSureIT), external drive (500GB USB drive), net drive (Ximeta 120), flash memory and optical media. For photos, we generally copy the files to CD or DVD right after we upload them, so the original shot is preserved. I use flash memory (CF card in a card reader) to backup frequently used data files (Quicken, etc). I have Acronis True Image Home which I use to drive the USB drive. My big challenge is to keep the backups up-to-date and organized - I have 3 copies of some files, and probably 0 copies of others.

We store very little information/data on our desktop hard drive. Everyone in our family uses our one computer...for work, school and play.
Because of the age of our computer and its processing speed (or lack of) we store almost everything on portable storage devices. Since we have regular medical bills, we've used Pharmacy "gift card incentives" (ie: Target Pharmacy) to purchase portable hard drives for me and my wife and our kids love flash drives.
I know the kids also use online storage opportunities. Our old desktop is more of an email reader or word processor than anything else.
It has taken a couple of years for us to get to this point. So far, this has worked for our family.

I don’t backup any other type of files since every school year I perform a fresh install of both my Desktop and Tablet. For my legacy system, I have a SCSI tape drive; the backups are slow, and they are costly (not being in an air purified environment, the tapes are destroyed in a year or two by ambient dust). Finally, for redundancy and to see if there was an easier, less time-consuming way, I bought an external network drive, enabling me to easily transfer data between my main system and my backup computer. Worked fine...until the network drive developed problems. The manufacturer, SimpleShare, is very slow and apparently indifferent about providing useful tech support. I want a reliable network drive for local backups. I'm debating subscribing to an online backup service - the benefit being it's offsite and automatic - for redundant backup capability.

I use a Windows Home Server for my primary backup. I made sure to use the "Duplication" feature to prevent data loss from a single disk failure. I also backup that to an external USB drive for offsite storage. I would love to use one of the many online services, but I'm too paranoid. Even encrypted, do I want all of my data sitting on some server somewhere? Not so much.

Happily Aperture prompts me to backup my photos to an external firewire drive regularly. I don't do that much else on my IMac, but try to remember to occasionally back up my ITunes and other documents to the external drive as well (I'm still using Tiger, waiting for Snow Leopard to upgrade so no Time Machine). An offsite backup would be a good thing, but I haven't worked out logistics because my internet connection at home is too slow to be practical. If I win this contest, I could use the portable drive to bring those files to my office and use the much better connection there

I do backup manually, with a shell script that I wrote (I'm on Linux). It basically just makes a .tgz archive of the entire system (Linux works differently than Windows, so yes this is possible
) minus whatever I exclude, and to restore, you just extract it at /. This can even be done _while_ the system is running, which I find pretty crazy. I would like a safer method, however.. I also don't have enough space to do a backup of anything but system files!

I'm doing a pictorial and documentary family history and it would be catastrophic if I lost the hundreds of hours of work I have done to date. I am one of 10 children and my father was one of 18, so you can see there is a huge amount of information and scanning of my relatives pictures and my own that has been done and more that needs to be done. As a lecturer of finance, the most important data for me are the lecture slides, problem sets, quiz questions and their solutions, grades of my former students (in case they request me for a recommendation later). Equally critical for me are video recordings of lectures offered both by me and the faculty that I invite for guest lectures. Of these, the slides, questions and gradesheets are archived at the end of every course and mailed to my gmail account (and labeled appropriately for quick retrieval). I also carry these constantly on my 8GB Sandisk pendrive. Since uploading video lectures takes time and since they occupy too much of my precious disk space, I just cut CDs and hope that they don't get scratched from multiple readings.
My personal data such as photos, financial data, I either upload them to my gmail account or cut CDs. I have long been thinking of getting a backup harddisk that would let me store everything at one central place and let me sleep easy. While I can store all my data - course archives, videos, photos, data - etc in the desktop storage solution, I can also carry the required course material and crucial personal stuff in the portable hard-disk.

Movies - various smallish hard drives attached to my DVR and burnt to DVDs.
Images - 1 copy on desktop, 1 copy on OQO, 1 copy split over USB memory.
Music - 1 copy on desktop, 1 copy on Media PC, 1 copy on various DVDs.
Docs and other data - 1 copy on desktop, 1 copy on OQO, some on Nokia E90.
I know it sounds like a mess and it is. I've been meaning to buy an extra large hard drive to consolidate it all but real life keeps swallowing what little money I have. Can you guess how this prize package would help me?

If I feel a need for something to be stored off-site, I'll do the laborious "burn file sub-systems to DVD" approach. Otherwise, it is much faster to copy files across my home network, to a system with enough empty storage to accept what I'm stashing. 500 GBytes would open up THAT avenue just a bit.

I backup to an external drive now. I do it irregularly for my home laptop, as much of my work is done using my work laptop which is backed up by the company.

Thanks for the giveaway...I do not currently have a backup plan as such, although I do burn a few CD/DVD'S of very important docs & some family photos. I should have probably learned my lesson when my hard drive went haywire awhile back but I was able to retrieve everything on that occasion; I suppose it will take a disaster for me to get a clue !

I use an external hard disk where only my files are placed and no programs are installed there. I also occasionally use my thumb drive and burn some necessary files to CD's.

i have my desktop backed up daily, but there's only enough available backup space to do about 1.5TB of the 2TB of data I have. For my laptop, I back up the important documents on my college's network drive but nothing beyond that.

My "backup" plan is to email critical files to myself at a web mail account. Yeah, it's cumbersome and certainly not guaranteed. In fact, I lost a LOT of stuff by doing that a few years ago when a web mail provider closed down unexpectedly. But until I can get an off-the-computer backup plan, it's all I have. I'm a writer and I have years' worth of manuscripts in progress and research materials from sources that are no longer available. I really really need this!!

As a sysadmin i keep telling ppl to backup. Yet... due to lazyness/no time/no space... I dont backup my self. My DDS3 drive that i used to backup with went pop last year and with drive sizes climbing its not been worth replacing it.
Over the years i've lost a 500mb (my GCSE and A Level projects, MUD code, Fido backups), a 4gb (all my old BBS stuff and contacts), a 10gb (Uni photos contacts my entire mail store) a pair of 40gbs (My utilities, images, install tweaks and old project work) and a 200gb (good bye my mp3's). That was the worst losses.
An external drive to backup to would make my life easier. I'd stop putting things off and actually do a proper backup.
Failing that... I will get a pair of 1tb drives come Feb and properly mirror them. Move all my stuff to them and get rid of the old drives... including the squeeking 40gb that occasionally looses itself in windows. (nothing wrong with its SMART status so figure it wont die yet.)

Currently I use an online back-up service which is great because it's relatively accessible but it's costly and more importantly VERY Slow retrieving files.
If I had to recovered an entire drive it would be agonizing.

Every few months as I amass more data I find myself needing to buy new backup drives. I’ve got about 5 now, and most are too small for purpose. The one I’m using at the moment is so cheap that it whines like a violated goat when it’s working; at least I always remember to turn it off…

My current back up system is so old fashioned! I copy files onto CD’s and so just burning CD’s is how I back things up. It makes for so much unnecessary clutter! This prize package would help me immensely because it would be a much more efficient and easier way to manage all my files. I basically am concerned about losing all of my large image files. I create digital art using fractals. I create the fractals using all of my original photographic files. I have to admit I have lost sleep in the past worrying that one day I am going to lose them all, the ones I have not backed up and it would really be a nightmare for me because I have put so much time and effort in creating some really cool art. Thank you so much for the opportunity to enter. Happy Holidays!

I just bought a Seagate 500gb external on black Friday. If I won this, I'd give one of the Desks to my mom, because she has all kinds of computer problems, and the portable I'd use to save all my graphic designs from work, so I always have them on hand for a portfolio.

Oooooo, I do not have a major back-up plan. We have a couple of computers, so if I really like something (like a picture, an essay, a pdf), I'll send it to my husbands computer via email or put it on a flash drive. So elementary... I guess I'll read your series and get into shape! I'd love to. It's my resolution!
