first off i must say i THOUGHT i posted this topic yesterday, but can't find it anywhere on the site. so, if it IS somewhere i apologize. when i open ie on my laptop, i notice that the url in the address bar is res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdoclc.dll/navcancl.htm . after a couple seconds, the url switches to my homepage, yahoo.com. there are no other symptoms of being hijacked, not as bad as i've read, that is. but the internet does seem rather slow, in spite of the fact that we have broadband access. sometimes i get a "winfixer" pop-up, but i've eliminated it in spybot. it comes back, though. another peculiarity i've noticed in my registry is that i seem to have two folders called "current version" in local machine/software/microsoft/windows. the second, more unusual "current version" folder has sub-folders control panel/extended properties\{305CA226-D286-468e-B848-2B2E8E697B74} 2 - which i've never seen before. i've run all the compulsory programs listed in your "start here" page, but the nagging url is still in ie upon opening. i've run hijackthis! and the log is here below: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 5:36:12 PM, on 3/19/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\ISSVC.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ACS\AOLacsd.exe C:\Program Files\ewido anti-malware\ewidoctrl.exe C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\NICCONFIGSVC\NICCONFIGSVC.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\PROSetWired\NCS\PROSet\PRONoMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\WLTRAY.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe C:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exe C:\Program Files\HijackThis.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ycomp/def.../search/ie.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ycomp/def...//www.yahoo.com R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com/ R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ycomp/def...//www.yahoo.com O2 - BHO: Yahoo! thanks, tigger!
i took the steps you advised, and have more confidence that my laptop is not infected. however, the url res://C:\windows\system32\shdoclc.dll\navcancl.htm is still the initial address that appears, albeit for just a couple seconds. is there a legitimate reason for this? also, is there a clearcut reason why i have two "current version" folders in the registry as outlined above? these are not urgent questions, i am just curious. thanks again for your help. this is the first time i've asked for techsupport online, but i've had plenty of viruses and problems over the years. i've always been able to "cure" them without asking before this time. this is a great site and you guys perform a great service. f. |

Hi again.
I have no idea about the second question of yours. You can try asking in the Windows XP forum. For the first question, let's try this. If you still have CWShredder, please run it again. If not, you can find it in one of my previous posts. Another thing is to reset your homepage and see if that helps. |
