Learning how to create a new topic is vital to receiving help at GeeksToGo. If you need help or just have some questions/ideas you would like to share, you need to create a topic. You must be a registered member of the site and currently logged in in order to start a new topic or reply to an existing one. If you haven't already created an account, please Click Here

The following steps will guide you in creating a new topic on GeeksToGo:

1. Take the time to consider the type of question you have. For instance, if your computer has viruses on it, you won't want to post in the WindowsXP forum. Read the description of each forum type, and choose the one that most closely matches the problem you are having.

2. Click on the forum that you want to create a topic in. Just above the list of current threads (topics), you will see theIPB Image button. Click on this to begin your own thread.

3. After clicking the New Topic button, you will be taken to another screen. In order to create your thread, you will need to fill in the following:
  • In the Topic Title box, enter a title that briefly describes your problem or question. Try to be specific, and not just say "Help me!". Try using something along the lines of "My computer won't shut down", "My anti virus found the Zlob trojan", or "How do I network my home computers?". These are just examples. Many Staff members will choose threads to help with based on their titles, due to the Staff members' particular area of expertise.
  • If you run out of room in the Title bar, you can use the Topic Description box. For example, if your title is "My computer keeps rebooting" you could enter "Anytime I try to open a program" for a bit further info. Entering this extra description is not necessary, but again will help us help you.
  • The largest box is the message body. This is where you tell us how we can help you. Give us as much information as you can, so that we can help you more effectively in a timely manner. If you have a malware problem, be sure you have already visited the Start Here thread and have a HijackThis log to paste in your topic body. If you have a question or problem with anything else, please be sure to let us know what type of computer you have, as well as any other system specs you know of.
  • Once you are finished typing your topic body, place a check mark in the small box underneath called Enable email notification of replies. This way, each time someone replies to your topic you will receive an email at the email address you registered with. This is the most effective way for you to be certain you have a reply waiting.
  • After you have entered all of the information, click on the Preview Post button at the bottom. This will take you to a screen that will show you how your post looks, and will also allow you to make changes if you wish to.
  • Now that you are satisfied with the way your post looks, click on the Post New Topic button. Your thread will be added, and you will be on your way to receiving quality, free computer help.
Please be patient, and keep in mind that the site is extremely busy at times. This is a volunteer site, and our Staff members all have "real lives" to attend to. We will help you as quickly as we can, without compromising the integrity of our work.
