Recovering files from a harddrive, Hard drive good, computer bad

A friend's computer died. I have installed his harddrive into a USB Casing for HDDs, and it comes online with no problem. I can access most directories, but not folders within his "Documents and Settings" directoy. It shows with "The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable."

I am suspecting that it may be blocking me from seeing the directory because of a rights issue... Is there a way to overcome that? His computer was quite old.... can I install the drive into a newer desktop and perhaps boot normally and logon as him?
