Hey guys,

So I've got a problem on a computer at work that is extremely frustrating. I posted originally in the Win XP forum and got limited success. It was suggested I come to this forum for help.

Referral Thread

The gist of the problem is that when we open "My Computer" we get no drives showing and if we try to close that window, the computer freezes for about 10-20 mins. We have tried all kinds of shortcuts to try to get around using My Computer but they are not working. Originally this was happening intermittently, but now it is happening everytime.

As per the rules of this forum, I have ran all of the anti-malware programs and have generated a HJT log.

Run HijackThis and put acheckmark before the following entries:

Then click Fix checked and reboot.

If that didn't help I'll need some additional information:

- I did understand correctly that this only happens if you use the "My Computer" shortcut on your desktop?
- Is your computer networked (sharing internet or printers)?
- Do you have any idea what might have triggered this behaviour (update, install)?

After rebooting, it appears as though the problem is fixed. But I am still leary of it as I have thought I've fixed it in the past. I'm afraid it may show its ugly head again!

In response to your questions:
1) I did understand correctly that this only happens if you use the "My Computer" shortcut on your desktop?
- Kinda, it happens whenever I try to get into "My Computer" (Explorer, My Computer shortcut, Drive shortcuts, etc). So I can't say its just the "My Computer" shortcut.

2) Is your computer networked (sharing internet or printers)?
- This machine is networked, but is not sharing it's internet connection or printers. It is used as a PC/ File Server for the office.

3)Do you have any idea what might have triggered this behaviour (update, install)?
- I don't really know when this started or what may have triggered it. (Wasn't working here at the time.)

Let me know if there's anything else that looks fishy or needs further work.

There have been some known issues with explorer crashing while it was trying to look for network drives.
Looking at your answers that might be our most likely option.

But let's hope that one of the orphaned BHO/Toolbar entries was responsible.

In that case it should stay solved.

I'll keep this thread open, so you can post here if the issue returns.

Well, I guess I'm partly psychic. The computer glitched again just now. I rebooted and "My Computer" worked fine. But this was the same as it was the last time I thought I 'fixed' it.
