Doesn't XP have that right-click-on-the-desktop function anymore?
You should get a menu with at the bottom line [Properties]
If you select the [Settings] tab you can set the colours.

This at least was true for all versions of Windows up to now (Leaving out the archaic 3.n versions )

Success!

( On my win2000 "Millenium 2.2" runs without colourswitching... )

Find the executable for the game, drag a short cut to the desktop

Right click, choose properties, choose compatibility tab, choose a version of windows, and click the run in 256 colors box.

Be forewarned, while many games run, some do not and will not, depending on how they access hardware. Especially true with sp2, it seems
