Jan 11, 2007 Hello Techies, I use P2P file sharing alot and have a high-speed cable and cable modem. Fine. Should be a piece of cake, with all library has to offer, right ?? Wrong !! The ISP, I now assume, is using private IP addresses when what we really need is a static internal IP address that won't tell the modem to act like a router. Some at the P2P Chat room techies have speculated that the ISP, Adelphia - (soon to be ComCast), needs new firmware and a better cable modem....that the pre-purchased (?) private IP addresses they use are a deterent to the P2P exchange set-up, intentionally. So I have been given the following advice: 1) Call the tech support at Adelphia/Comcast and claim to need some ports open to play an internet game, such as "Aliens vs Predators" and specify the TCP port is 8049, and the UDP port is 8900. Someone thought that was a joke, and was quite dubious that the ISP would consider doing a thing like that. All I know is this: I keep getting low ID's....all the time, in fact. I also get booted alot because of an Oxc0000005 (virtual memory) error. Finally, after all our troubleshooting and discussions in the P2P Chat room I am convinced this 'cheap-o' IP address that Adelphia is selling is irrepairably causing the Motorola SB5101 Cable Modem to act like an un-configured router, that gets me low ID's and badly sustained connectivity. It also sounds like Adelphia/Comcast may not do anything to help me around this. I would greatfully appreciate any advice.....long live P2P - scottportraits |
