I have been experiencing some big problems with my computer and need your help if possible.

It all seems to have started with Microsoft Word. The program wouldn't respond and I was getting messages like: "The system is dangerously low on resources" and "Not enough disk space", I would have to soft boot in order to use the computer.

Then I lost video (display looked like Safe Mode). Thought it was the video card so I installed a new card. If I got to a screen that was 32 Bit, I had no mouse.

I eventually solved the Microsoft Word problem by renaming a few normal.dot files. But it didn't resolve other problems

Began using Msconfig in various combinations.

Now, it seems I can get the correct video settings and the mouse when the system.ini is disabled. I have tried disabling folders in system.ini, but each time the computer goes back to the original problem. I have not found the problem folder in the system.ini.

I'm sure there is more, but that seems to be the most important information.

Would help if you could post the contents of your system.ini file so someone could look at it and perhaps see what you need to change in it.

I opened the msconfig and then the system.ini, but was not able to copy it.

I found a file named system.ini in my Windows folder, but it doesn't look the same

Hi rebecca.

Try entering into the 'run' box:

scanreg /restore (leaving a space between scanreg and the slash)

to reset the registry as well as system.ini

The *.TSH (troubleshooting) extension is just a result of having disabled the file with msconfig.

Re-enabling system.ini with msconfig would remove the TSH reference in the file header.

If that does not fix your mouse/video problem I'll research it further.

Oh, and are you running 98 or ME?

Hi PIP22,

I am using ME.

I typed scanreg / restore in the Run box and a black DOS screen came up and said scanreg complete (or something like that)

Should I now try enabling all system.ini files in msconfig?

I still have to use the computer with the system.ini disabled. Otherwise, it opens without a mouse, then opens with a Safe Mode appearance. Have to reinstall the Video Drivers and disable system.ini in order to have the video settings and the mouse.

Additionally, if I update anything, i.e.; Norton, Video Settings, I get the following:

"Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2 %1 %2"

After approx. 2-3 pages of that message the Setup is Completed and I can get into Windows.

When I Shut-Down the Computer it freezes and I almost always have to soft boot and and then try Shut-Down again.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your help. However, I had already tried System Restore, among other things, before I contacted geekstogo. That didn't solve the problem. The last thing I was told to do was:

Which I did. Then I enabled the system.ini files in msconfig and the same problems with video settings and mouse occurred.

I also have used the renaming winini files, which does help stop the %1 %2 problems. My point was that each time I update a driver or norton, among other things, that error occurs again.

How much free space percentage wise do you have on the hard drive? You may be running out of room.

A problem with the graphics could also cause issues with the mouse. Are the NVIDIA graphics on board or do you use a PCI/AGP MX 400 graphics card? Your graphics hardware may be failing.

One of the first things I did was change my video card. I had a 64MB ATI Radeon and changed to a NVDIA GE Force2 MX/MX 400. I realize now it wasn't the video card as the problems occur each time I enable the system.ini in msconfig. As long as I have the system.ini disabled the video and mouse functions are OK with either video card.

I have also tried enabling the system.ini one file at a time, I have not found the problem file as each time I enable anything I go back to a Safe Mode appearance.


The other problems I mentioned i.e.; %1 %2 if I update anything and shut down problems as well as a very slow computer are still occurring with system.ini disabled.

The link that whiskeyman pointed you to was not to use system restore it was how to repair system.
The error message shows your restore folder is corrupt (to large) do you have an ME startup disk and do you have the ME Cd
