Slow Media Files, Music/Video/Burning Issues

OS: Windows XP
I've been having problems for a while with playing any audio tracks and videos/jpg/wmv etc via Nero/Media Player or most other programs. It plays but really slow and distorted.

I have recently freed up loads of space by transferring a lot of files to an external hard drive (I still play the tracks/vids from my PC and have problems)

I think this problem is stopping me from burning CDs/DVDs too.

Any ideas?
