Take a look at these links that explain the default shares (those that end with $).

http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/Articl...7527/37527.html
http://labmice.techtarget.com/articles/win...tychecklist.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314984

I am not able to stop the shares on my machine (as stated in MS Article 314984). However, you'll notice that the default shares will be shared again each time Windows loads. You can try the registry edit shown in the Labmice article to disable all shares except IPC$. You can use the following registry edit to remove the IPC$ share remote Netbios attack vulnerability (this will not prevent the IPC$ share):
    1. Open Regedit
    2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> System -> CurrentControlSet -> Control -> Lsa -> restrictanonymous
    3. Change "Value Data" from 0 to 1
    4. This will disable remote logon to a null IPC$ share

** Always use care when editing the registry. Be sure to back up the registry key (right-click, Export) or set a system restore point before making any changes.
