Vista Refuses to Burn CD's & DVD'S Correctly, Every Disc Goes in the Garbage

I'm running Vista Ultimate with 512 Ram (I know - I'm upgrading with another gig stick in the next few days), but it's just difficult. iTunes won't burn cds, Nero won't burn them, and DVD's will burn but not work correctly on any player?

iTunes will let me get to the point where it recognizes my drive with a disc in it, and it'll burn maybe 4 kilobytes and then give me an error - thus rendering the disc completely useless. How much of a bum-f#ck deal is that?
[I'm writing because I'm sick of wasting discs hoping that it will work]

Nero is wary of the drive and sometimes won't recognize it - but still doesn't burn anything correctly.

I haven't increased any settings to make the drive unstable, in fact - the drive is pretty much brand new. I've had it for a month. I replaced it because my last one was kinda doing the same thing to me. I still got a good deal, this drive is a CD/DVD Reader and Burner and is super amazing, but [bleep] if I can just get it to work with my computer! It's hooked up correctly. I think something is just wrong in the system.

I'm sure it's not a RAM issue, although like I said I will be upgrading it soon.
I can play songs perfectly and my iPod updates fine.

I just don't know what's going on with my burning capabilities,
and I hope that you guys can help me.
You've never failed in the past.

Thanks You,
Dan

P.S. - I've attached an Everest Report so that you can properly diagnose my situation. Thanks!

Hi hysteria...

Before we go into this too deep, try burning a disk at a slower speed...with only 512MB of RAM, it may be generating write errors at the speed you are using. If that doesn't help, post back and we'll dig a little deeper.

Hey Wannabe!

It's good to have you helping me again! I've tried burning discs in both Nero and iTunes, and nothing happens in either program. It's even more strange than I had originally thought.

I got these both when I was trying to burn one song at the lowest speed in Nero (which is 4x):

Really? A Brand New CD-R? Hm..

--- After this - I tried erasing a CD-RW to see if that would work and I received the same error messages from Nero.

Then I got these when I was trying to burn these in iTunes:

^^^This one was taken after clicking the burn button, with a new blank cd already in the drive.

For iTunes I put a blank CD in and click the burning button (after setting it to the lowest speed of 1x).

Soon after the second screenshot I have here for iTunes it says "Checking Blank Media" or something to that effect -- the drive jars around for a minute, and nothing happens. I believe the first screenshot error occured because Nero was open at the time when I was trying to burn a different disc in iTunes.

confused1.gif ¿Por que?

At least last time I tried burning stuff (a week or so ago) it would burn the cd badly. Now it doesn't burn at all?

(Thanks for looking into this W)

Click Start then Run and type regedit...click "Ok"

In the left pane, expand (click +) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SYSTEM, then CurrentControlSet, then Control, then Class, and click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

In the right pane, are either UpperFilters or LowerFilters present?

You need to expand the "Class" folder and then click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} to see if the filters are present.

Right click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and choose "Export". Name this file filters and save it to your desktop.

Then right click on LowerFilters and choose "Delete"...accept the deletion. Do the same with UpperFilters.

Reboot and try to burn a disk.

There are 2 images attached from iTunes and the other are 2 from Nero.

I got that big image from iTunes right when I started it up after the reboot, and the second smaller one when I was trying to burn something anyways.

Nero is still kind of doing the same thing.

Edit: Wannabe, I have been looking into buying more RAM. I have DDR PC 3200 Slots and have been checking out what they have listed on Fry's. I can probably afford a 1 gig stick right now. (We have a Fry's in town.) I want to go over there and get it, but how much of a difference would it make? Photoshop and Sony Vegas are struggling to perform. I opened my machine and noticed that I also have 2 free SDR RAM slots: how do they differ from DDR RAM and should I get those too?

Right click on the file you saved to the desktop (filters) and choose "Merge"...accept the change.

Let's try reinstalling the optical drives. Open Device Manager and expand the DVD/CD-ROM drive category. Right click on each of the drives and choose "Uninstall"...accept the change. Reboot and let Windows reinstall the devices...then see if you still have the problem.

One gig of additional RAM will make a big difference in your machine's performance...I would stick with the DDR for the moment, though.

I tried to install that, but all it did was put two files in my C:\ Directory, and when I the executable-sort file, I get a quick command prompt that says something like "unknown error." [Was able to capture somewhat of a screenshot in the first attached]

And for Wannabe, the driver installed automatically after I rebooted, but even after 5 minutes on 6x or 8x writing speed, the drive isn't burning the 2 songs in my iTunes playlist. It has stalled at 0%. [See second attachment]

And while I was writing this very post, see the third attachment for a very familiar error message (to me at least).
And yes - on the actual CD that was to be burnt - I can see a very small ring of burnt info on the disc near the middle, just like all the others.

Thanks for helping me with this, I know it's a pain in the neck.

Well, right now Nero isn't recognizing my drive. I only have one drive and as of the last couple posts - I was able to uninstall my old cd-rom drive via the uninstallation of the virtual. The drive I have now is my main drive. It instead created an image-file of the song which I wanted to burn under the name "Image Recorder." [Log attached, mentions "<GA3875A SEI201I>" which is I believe my old drive]

In Windows Media, it won't accept my MP3 files (I rip in MP3) from my iTunes folder, and well -- just look at the attached picture. "Attach a burner"? and "Start Burn" is greyed out.

Edit: Windows Media will accept MP3's, but it still looks like the attached image. Greyed out and asking me to connect a burner.
