Ok this is problem is on my second computer it runs 2002 version MEC XP I have recently upgraded this to cable connection. Previously was running through Compuserve (dial up). As soon as the company came and installed the new modem it started to turn on by itself when I turned it off. About 3min off then it boots up. I am wondering if i have a sleeper. since I never hardly used for the web it went dormant till it had access to the web from new connection and it started dialing.? Any way I will post the log . you guys are great . I also have maybe a problem with another computer . (this one) but 1 at a time so heres the log from my other computer. OK since no-one has attempted to help on this yet. I will list some updates on my progress. Ok I looked through several other topics on the forum trying to find my own answer from research and couldnt come up with much. If I go through normal shut down. The computer restarts within 30 seconds. By itself. If I shut it down by holding the power button for ten seconds it will stay off. I am not sure if this gets me any closer to a reply or answer. But it is as close as I can get . I dont know what it could be. I saw in forums it might be outdated drivers.. but I have no-idea at this point. Oh and the Operating system is MICROSOFT MEDIA CENTER EDITION XP 2002 W/ sp2. I bought it from Fry's Electronics, Bstards never gave me cd with the operating system on it either. UGH! So any help is greatly appreciated.

After doing some research deeper into the problem itself I found that it isnt too uncommon. I found this Link somewhere and it was very helpful in diagnosing the possibilities. http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm . So for those of you who are experiencing this . What I found my BIOS settings were ok, but I had a hidden "wake on" in my device manager. You can check in:

CONTROL PANEL / ADMINISTRATOR TOOLS / COMPUTER MANAGEMENT / DEVICE MANAGER / ETHERNET ADAPTOR / ADVANCED TAB /

Then under PROPERTY It will say "wake setting" or something like that select that then under VALUE change this to NONE


This worked for me. His computer was set to work on a network from Factory. So when he turned off his computer the dayam modem would send him the signal to turn on.
This happened as soon as he had cable modem installed. So if you have a similar situation and find this helpful . well then by all means give it a try . We also did AVG scan in safemode after to see if anything was in there . Clean report.

So please run HijackThis, click "Do a system scan only" and check this entry in bold

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
• Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)6 Update 3...allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Post a new HijackThis log after that.
