If you want a more secure web-browser without losing the advantages of 'tabs', you could switch to Firefox or Opera -- both of them will import your IE Favorites. Firefox is more popular than Opera, but Opera starts and opens pages faster than either IE or Firefox (that's why I use it).
As neither Opera or Firefox use 'ActiveX' they are much safer to use than IE. where malware infection is concerned.

Firefox here: http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/products/firefox/

Opera here: http://www.opera.com/

Okay, so it doesn't solve your IE tabs problem as such, but, hey, this way's easier!
