The hard drive says "Maxtor" on it. Resolve this issue immediately.

I have a Seagate PATA drive... here's the story
  1. I go to CompUSA and buy a Seagate SATA drive because it's on sale.
  2. Install in my computer. Install new XP. Two days pass. BSOD and crashing.
  3. I call techsupport, drive is defective. I replace drive.
  4. See 2 and 3, but replace two days with two weeks.
  5. See 4.
  6. I buy a PATA drive and use SeaTools DOS to zero fill the drive. It works. I'm here right now.

I'm thinking it must be pretty pathetic if you have to write zeros to everywhere on the drive before it will work.

Hmm, that's weird. First time I hear of such a thing. Anyway, I always buy my hard drives from the local computer store. They're not the cheapest, of course, but when you come slamming the hard drive into their table, they'll swap it right away without making a mess. On the other hand, if I buy it through Office Depot (not sure if you have that in the US...) or such, it would take YEARS to replace. Buying it on the internet is the best option, but then you have to drive to a distant corner of the country to get it replaced. I rather pay $25 more tongue.gif
