If your cable modem connects to the PC with a USB cable you need to install the modem's USB driver (usually supplied by the modem manufacturer in the box, or by the cable service provider (if they supplied the modem).
If you can't find the driver CD you should have a look at the modem too see if it has an ethernet port (rectangular like a large phone connection socket). Then check your PC to see if it has the same kind of port on the back panel. If both modem and PC have an ethernet port you can buy a CAT5 or CAT6 modem-to-PC cable and use it instead of USB. No driver required for modem when using ethernet. If modem has an ethernet port but not the PC, it's easy to fit a PCI 10/100 network card to give it such a port.
