Okay, my problem is that I did indeed try to download this fake codec and install it on my system. Not once, but twice, when I wondered why I couldn't see the video still. I don't know if that matters at all but I don't want to leave anything out just in case. I have run Spybot - Search and Destoy, Avast! Anti-virus, Lavasoft AdAware and also the program that your own topic recommends FixIEDef. I noticed that the wording in the Critical Warning box I received was different than those that were shown and perhaps it's something new. I'll show it here ![]() Below I'll post my HijackThis log. Hello there again, I'd like to say firstly that I'm sorry if I have wasted anyone's time on this. It looks like the problem is now fixed. After running all of the scans I had and stumbling upon this site by way of Google. I had posted after the FixIEDef program did not work, where it had said to post a HijackThis log here.
After I posted that I 'thumbed' through, so to speak, the sticky posts at the top of the forums and downloaded and ran the programs. Lo and behold SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition detected my problem and took care of it. In case anyone is interested, the problem lay in O2 - BHO: IE plugin - {6F6D1C90-7BEE-4A15-8DAB-9C37A643FD3A} - C:\WINDOWS\pmspl.dll. Once again, I'm sorry if I took anyone's time in this. I would like to say though, after reading through many posts as I waited for the scans to run on the affected computer, that this is quite possibly the best and most helpful site/forum group I have ever come across. I'm sure had it come to it the problem would have been fixed handily. Keep up your awesome work, I am sure everyone appreciates everything you do and have done. |

Hello
QUOTE Once again, I'm sorry if I took anyone's time in this. No apology needed. Nobody's time was wasted. QUOTE I'm sure had it come to it the problem would have been fixed handily. We get so many logs, it makes it tough to answer them all. However if you wish to do the following I can double check to make sure your PC is running ok(it won't take long) Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.

After attempting to run the scan twice it's failed both time coming up with a Windows Error report saying it has encountered a problem and needs to close.

That happens sometimes it seems. Try this instead
Download WinPFind3U.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind3u on your desktop.
Make sure you attach the report in your reply. Also post a new HijackThis log |

You just have some left overs, so there isn't much work to do
Start WinPFind3U. Copy/Paste the information in the quotebox below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button. QUOTE [Kill Explorer] [Registry - Non-Microsoft Only] < ShellExecuteHooks [HKLM] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellExecuteHooks YN -> {57B86673-276A-48B2-BAE7-C6DBB3020EB8} [HKLM] -> Reg Data - Key not found [AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5] *System* -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\\System YN -> lsass.exe -> lsass.exe < Winlogon\Notify settings [HKLM] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\ YN -> ScCertProp -> wlnotify.dll YN -> Schedule -> wlnotify.dll YN -> SensLogn -> WlNotify.dll YN -> wlballoon -> wlnotify.dll < BHO's > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\ YN -> {6F6D1C90-7BEE-4A15-8DAB-9C37A643FD3A} [HKLM] -> %SystemRoot%\pmspl.dll [IE plugin] [Empty Temp Folders] [Start Explorer] [Reboot] The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that information back here along with a new WinPFind3u scan(attach the WinPFind3 scan report). I will review the information when it comes back in. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Scan Mail Bases
Also post a new HijackThis log. No need to attach any of these reports, you can just paste them here |

I followed your instructions on this and it didn't open any notepad showing the fixes after the fix, it just told me that to finish it had to reboot the computer so I clicked yes. I am attaching the scan done after the reboot though.

Your logs are clean ! We need to do a few little things
You can delete the tools that we used You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components. * Click Start > Control Panel. * Click Add/Remove Programs. * Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name. * Click the Remove or Change/Remove button. Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer from here Now we need to create a new System Restore point. Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste) %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close. Next goto Start Menu > Run > type cleanmgr Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created. To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window. Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections. * Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at : http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. * To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs: SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here * SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make Internet Explorer more secure
* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future. * Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from Here * Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place' Here Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested. |
