How to erase all of the information in my computer

I bought a new computer and want to give my old computer to my daughter. Before I give her the computer, I would like to permanently erase all files, folders, etc.
However, I want the computer system (XP Home) left intact, along with the internet browser and Email.
How is the best way to do this...is there a free download that allows me to pick what items to erase permanently and not damage the operating system???

Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim,

There is no real good/easy way of doing that, manually deleting personnel data is one way but time consuming and you could mis something.

Personally I would write zero's to the drive using the manufactures utility's or a protuct called "dban" then reinstall the operating system. This is all so time consuming but at least every thing is off the drive and you got a clean install

Howdy:

Actually, if you want to ensure a clean system, put in a new harddrive and re-install Windows.

Even after an fdisk and format there are programs out there that can recover files.

Yes Murray has given the ultimite protection and heck hardrives are cheap now adays, assuming this is a new drive to do a clean install you put in your windows cd or restore cd and follow the instructions after witch you may have to run a drive cd if the computer came with one. You also have to get a virus scan installed and run MS update. Plus reload all your software

I suggest taking the old hard drive to some one who has a cutting torch and blowing holes in the old drive.
(No one will get any data off of it then.)

Actually I disagree... if you just "blow holes " in it, it would still be possible with extreme means.... The only way to permanently destroy the data would be to incinerate the whole drive.... or at least all the platters....
