I just installed TurboTax trying to begin getting taxes done, and when i tried to open my BCM after I installed TurboTax, I got the following message.

Business Contact Manager has encountered a problem and needs to close, we are sorry for the inconvenience."

I did not have a problem before installing Turbotax, and noticed on another forum that some one else had the same problem.

I tried to uninstall Turbotax, and reopen, BCM and still the same message. I tried to restore to a prior time, and when windows shuts down it does not restart again, and i have to power down and restart, and thus no restore. ...

I also tried to do the repair of Office 2003, but it wont work either.

I have windows XP Pro, and service pac 2...with office 2003. I have not had a problem with BCM before installing Turbotax. I called Turbotax and they couldn't do anything for me as their product runs ok.

Any Suggestions???

I need my email as well as to do my tax....

Here is what I found to date on trying to debug this thing.

It seems that TurboTax installs .net 2.0 on your system. I already had .net 1.1 and outlook BCM was working fine. I noted that both 1.1 and 2.0 were on the system, thus I deleted both of them and re-installed .net 1.1. when i did this i could open BCM and my outlook for email and everything seemed fine again.

I then deleted .net 1.1 and installed Turbotax again and it installed .net 2.0, and now i can bring up outlook and BCM, however after a short time i get the following message: And it again closes like before.

The second msg that i get is:

Microsoft Office Outlook
Cannot start the reminder service. Unable to show reminders. The Reminders folder could not be found. Another application closed unexpectedly while using your Personal Folders file’C:\Documents and Settings\Denny\local settings\application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst’. To prevent potential damage to your Personal Folders file, it will not be available until you close all applications currently using it.

Is there a upgrade to Office 2003 to upgrade it to .net 2.0? or some way I can get both Turbotax and outlook to work.

When i deleted both versions of.net i got a msg " MScoree.dll not found....".....so i couldn't run the outlook BCM..

Any suggestions???

I encountered the same problem re: .NET 2.0 conflict with Outlook. I've seen a few other (possibly related) message threads on other boards about potential .NET 2.0 conflicts with Outlook add-ins. I believe that MS Business Contact Manager is such an add-in (?). I'm not Windows/.NET-savvy, but I suspected this might be the issue.

In any event, I tried installing the latest MS Office 2003 service pack (SP3) - didn't appear to do the job (though probably a good update anyway). Then I tried installing the first service pack (SP1) for Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager - ah ha! Once I reinstalled TurboTax (and .NET 2.0) all was well. If this is any value, I included the MS download sites below.

Note 1: I'm running MS Office 2003 on Windows XP (Home edition). In Outlook "About Business Contact Manager" (under Help) I was running version 1.00.2002.01 and now (after the update) am running 1.00.2002.08.

Note 2: there are two subsequent service packs ("Service Pack 1 for Business Contact Manager Update and Small Business Accounting" and "Service Pack 3 for Business Contact Manager Update and Small Business Accounting") that I did not try to install - they may or may not also solve this prob.

You are right on......I started looking for different upgrades....
I finnally upgraded my MS Outlook 2003 with business contact Manager, and once uploaded and then installing TurboTax again, I did not get the error in OUtlook...I have access to my email and turbotax is running...

I just want to say thanks to DennConn for raising this issue and to ttaxuser for the resolution.

I had a problem trying to get a simple "Wake On Lan" function working to wake my Thecus n5200Pro up. Someone had written a very simple utility where you create a batch file using the utility he wrote and you use the MAC address of the NAS as an argument. The only condition was that you had to make sure you have at least the 2.0 version of .NET Framework loaded in your PC. I had version 1.1 loaded.

I went ahead an installed version 2.0 and I got exactly the same problem as what DennConn got after he loaded .Net Framework 2.0. I could no longer run up my Outlook 2003 client. I followed the resolution that ttaxuser recommended and I can now run up my Outlook client without the BCM error message. The interesting thing is that when I checked this on my development PC I didnt get the problem because I didnt have BCM installed within the Outlook 2003 client.

As ttaxuser states the old version of BCM will be displayed as 1.00.2002.01 and after you run the Service Pack upgrade it changes to 1.00.2002.08.

This was driving me nuts because it was meant to be such a simple task of getting the WOL function working but it caused such a headache but I am glad that I have got a fix.

I"m having a similar problem, though caused by downloading "Graboid" video watching software, not the tax program. I noticed when it was downloading, that it did update my Microsoft .NET Framework to 2.0. So the cause is the same.

Currently I'm following the advice given in Post #3, to

1. Download and run the Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) - I believe I already have this SP installed but am re-doing it. I note that this apparently doesn't fix the issue, but am doing it anyway.

2. Install the first service pack (SP1) for Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager. I'll do this next.


Will get back to you with my results.


I have a few questions:

1. Why do I need/use Business Contact Manager in Outlook? I don't think I use this. Could I simply disable that portion of Outlook, since that is the part that is failing?

2. I got in a loop with the BCM failure in Outlook and couldn't get out of it while leaving Outlook open - so if indeed I could disable BCM, I wouldn't be able to. Shouldn't there be a way to stop the error messaging so I can control Outlook? Currently it is dead to me - cannot get in to it at all to change settings, etc. This is troubling.

3.Shouldn't Microsoft know about these issues and do something? Both programs are Microsoft. But when I searched Microsoft.com support area for the Error message: "Business Contact Manager had encountered a problem and needs to close", I got no direct hits. Strange, isn't it?



Notes:

2. I also did (previously) a repair on my Microsoft Office application. Did not help.



My Results:

1. After running the second SP, I can get into Outlook again. What a relief!!!!

2. Now I'm having errors in Send/Receive. I replaced my email address with xxxx below.
Task 'xxxx@xxxx.net - Receiving' reported error (0x80040900) : 'The server name you entered can not be found on the network (it might be down temporarily). Please verify that you are online and that the server name is correct.'

So... I think the SP update somehow made my email server name get lost. I'll start troubleshooting that now. Sigh.
