Hey folks...Vista acting up again.

I managed to install the game with no fuss, but for some reason it switches off for no reason; it seizes up then cuts out completely, and I am returned to the desktop with a black screen, till Guild disappears. I tried working on the compatability for both the exe files, putting them on xp (which is right, methinks), but it still cuts out. Should I try re-installing, or is there something better?

That is quite odd the Guild 2 is not that old it is under 2 years and there do not seem to be any known issues with it and Windows Vista other than install problems. I would try updating your graphics drivers if you have not done already. Is it a clean install of Vista or did you upgrade?

I think I might have figured out the problem: I was cheated by the @#$%@@ who sold me the laptop. The system's supposed to have 2GB RAM, when in fact it's just under 1, and the rest is a hard drive paging file. So I guess the game's just running out of RAM before it can save or go further. Does that sound possible?

It is possible but unlikely to cause a complete crash as the game would use the harddrive paging file, you could try increasing the pagefile size and see if that helps at all.

Funnily enough, I can't seem to be able to do that. For some reason, the controls for messing with the paging file are locked out, even though I'm running the administrator account. Am I missing something? Interestingly, I've been looking through the System Requirements Lab website to see what games my system can run, and a lot of them apparently won't because the site's diagnostics tell me I have too little Ram.

Anyway, I was actually planning on getting another high-speed RAM chip to kick it up to 2 GB. I'm hoping that will help.

The only reason I can think of for it locking you out of those setting is if you clicked cancel on the UAC pop-up or if one never came up in the first place. If you have UAC turned off then this is even more of a mystery. There is a chance going up to 2GB of ram will help, one thing is certain 2GB of ram is needed to run Vista smoothly so you will at least see and improvement there.

Hmmm... well, Vista is running pretty smoothly in any case, and I haven't been coming across any problems with any other applications (except the data recovery for my shot external drive, but I think it's more to do with the drive than anything). I'll let you know how it goes when I have the time to get the chip and install it.
