how not to reformat, reformating drive

OS: windows xp



im not sure if it is right to posting this here, but whenever i try to access my e drive, the computer would prompt "e drive is not formatted. would you like to format it now?", then when i click no, and try to access e drive again, the message "e:/ is not accessible. invalid parameters." (or the likes of it)

my e drive has loads of stuff stored in it and reformatting it means losing whatever data in it. but if i dont reformat it, i cant open e drive at all.

help!
