QUOTE I'm having a problem with programs on my computer not being able to connect to the internet. Internet explorer can connect fine, but nothing else can connect. I'm running Windows XP and not using any type of anti-virus programs. The only things that are being used are windows firewall, and the firewall through my modem. I left for a couple months and came back to a computer that was running slow an had some spyware programs on it. I useually just run adaware and keep everything clean myself. I always delete cookies, temp files, and history. I keep startup programs at a minimum, just starting what I need. I also recently went into the services section in administratinve tools and kind of tweaked it so the computer starts and shuts down much quicker. It use to take about 1-2 minutes after clicking shut down to turn off, now it useually takes under 10 seconds. The internet problem existed before I changed the services though. I don't remember the problems I was originally having, but adaware wasen't fixing it, so I useed smitfraudfix. Thats fixed whatever the problem was, but I think thats when this problem started with programs not being able to access the internet. Also after using smitfraudfix, everytime I went online it would bring me to either microsoft.com or msn email as the home page. I tried changing the home page through internet options and adware, but nothing worked. Then I changed it in the registry and that fixed it. Not sure if that was related to a virus or not. Ok, back to my current problem. I cant access anything that requires the internet such as AIM. I also cannot connect in AdAware to update the definitions file. I always get some type of error saying it cant connect to the server and to check my firewall settings. I have tried shutting off the windows firewall and the firewall through my modem and neither helped. And all the programs that cannot connect are in the exceptions section in the windows firewall. Thay are checked allowing them to connect to the internet. Also, there are expired versions of Norton Internet Security and Symantec on my computer if that makes a difference. I don't have them set to come on at all, there just there b/c I never deleted them. Any help would be appreciated, thanks. I read the page on what to do before posting a hijackthis log and did what I could. Ran ATF cleaner. Created new and eraced previous system restore points. Installed AVG Anti-Spyware, but it has the same problem and cannot connect to the internet to update the definitions file,. So I didn't bother running it b/c I figured it wouldn't find anything. Installed Super Anti-Spyware. When it asked to update the definitions, I said yes, but it didn't seem like it did anything. Told it to check for updates again and it said they were up to date. Ran the full system scan and it didn't find anything. Tried to do the Online Panda Activescan, but when the box comes up to download the active x controll, the web page freezes. Tried it more than once, restarted the computer, tried again, never worked. Not sure why its not working. I never have any internet problems other than the one stated above. Installed the latest windows updates. Installed and ran Hijackthis. Useually I only have 2 things checked in startup. I'm not sure if you wanted everything in services set back to how it was before I changed it. I was already having this problem before I changed any of those anyways. I do have screen shots saved of the services how they were originally set and how they are now if you needed to see that or if you need me to change them back. I figured the problem out. I use to have some type of Norton internet security on the computer and I just disabeled it without uninstalling it. I stopped all the startup files and services related to it, but I guess part of it was still running.
I enabeled all the startup files and all the windows services. Then after restarting the computer and opening one of the prgrams that originally wouldn't work, a box from Norton opened and said that the program was trying to access the internet and if I wanted to give it access. I said yes and everything is working again. So I guess the problem is that if you stop norton anti virus from running without uninstalling, it is still stopping all new programs that are downloaded from accessing the internet untill it gives them access. You can disable norton anti virus and everything will work as long as you enable it when you first download a program that needs the internet. Once norton gives the program access to the internet, that program will always be able to access the internet untill you download a new version. You do not have to keep norton running. When searching for an answer to my problem, I found that a lot of pepole online had the same problem and were asking how to fix it, but got no response. Hopefully this will help some people will this problem in the future. Check to make sure the anti virus program is running under the startup tab in msconfig. Also, if you diabeled the anti virus in the services section, that will have to be enabeled also. Before changing the services make sure to make a new restore point incase you change something that effects how the computer runs and you dont remember what you changed. You can "tweak" the services section to make your computer startup and shutdown quicker, but be carefull with what you change. If you don't know what it is, look it up online first and see what it's for. The services can be accessed through: control panel, administrative tools, services. Or go to run and type services.msc My problem is solved and this thread can be locked. |
