Laptop with Vista, internet wont install on to laptop

My daughter has just bought a toshiba satelitte laptop from a home catalouge company, it has Vista Home Premium loaded, she already has a desktop computer with XP loaded and connected to virgin Media via a cable and a Netgear Router, this works fine. when she tries to load the connection programe to access the internet on her laptop it only get so far then wont do anything , she has tried loading the programme via cable connection and still no luck.she has also tried to access the internet through the preloaded programmes that comes with Vista again no luck. Any help would be appreciated, we are not techies so simple instructions would be appreciated. Thanks

Virgin Media should be a case of just plug a network cable from the router into the back of the laptop and job done. You don't need to run anything.

Thanks for the help. we found the problem to be simply that the brodband box can only handle a single output and that was to the desktop, moved cable to the Router and made desktop and laptop wireless solved the problem and now everything is hunkydory.
