I am trying to play a DVD disc that was supposedly created from a VHS tape. I gather, from reading, that it needs to be DE-CODED? I have Windows Media Player...10 or 11...which only plays camera videos previously downloaded and the SAMPLE PLAYLIST of music. I JUST DOWNLOADED "XP Codec Pack 2.3.7 I placed the Title of the new disc in Playlist menu. How the heck do you play the darn thing??? I thought I would find an option to "decode" or something... or is it automatic? I don't know how it was compressed or any tech. info. like that... I thought that's what the decoder was for? SHOULD A DISC INSERTED NOT PLAY AUTOMATICALLY??? I get the message that WINDOWS CANNOT READ THIS DISC... thought decoder would fix that. ******************************************************** I have 2 disc drives in my tower... RW 48-24-48 and DVD ROM Which one should play it --- if any at all? (Does not play on regular (TV)- DVD player, either...in fact it made loud clicking noises when I tried!) ***************************************** DISC I.D.....TYPE??? The disc itself has the following on inner rim: BRAND: BERKLEY & JENSEN CMDR47C-CAEWM03-022 0104 He did not label the play side...so I assume the words should read the right way up! PUZZLED & FLUSTERED... Rainey777417 Thx for any enlightenment! This post has been edited by Rainey777417: May 4 2008, 07:51 AM |

All that matters on a DVD is how its encoded. Therefore you download the appropriate codec for Media Player or whichever program to play it with.
Without knowing how its been encoded and put together, I'm not quite sure what I can suggest, short of downloading the K-Lite Codec Packs: http://www.codecguide.com and seeing if any of them play it. Aside from that, best thing to do is contact the person who put it together. If it doesn't play in a normal DVD Player then its not a DVD to specifications. Messages of "Windows cannot read this disk" would suggest the physical DVD disk is corrupt. |

Hi, Neil!
Thx for getting back! Correction: The error message reads... Windows cannot (read or open) this FILE....not DISC. Oh, well...same animal, I guess! Does the fact that it "clatters" loudly on a normal DVD player also suggest that it is corrupt? THAT WAS SCARY. They are new out of a box...as far as I know. He made 2. Kinda coincidental that they both don't work. I'm sure I downloaded that Codec Lite Pack...but don't know what to do with it. If I have choices which components to check off...which do I choose? When WMP comes up...do I have to do anything? or should it just play? Should it be in top (RW) or bottom disc drive (DVD)...when home made? Thx for your time. I'll keep bangin' away at it til the person who made it comes to town. Ciao. Rainey |

Unable to read the file is essentially the same animal. File may be corrupt.
"clattering" sounds are not good. Sounds of spinning and starting to play are good sounds. Any others are not. If it only occurs on the two disks your friend made there's something seriously wrong somewhere. WMP, if it's a DVD made to spec, should play automatically, otherwise it'll only play when you double-click on a (valid non-corrupt) file. Home made DVDs, again if probably specced, should play in any DVD player you care to introduce them to, computer or otherwise. |
