Hy.I bought a new pc recently.All the parts a perfectly new.This is what i got.
Asus M2N-E-SLI,a AMD 5600+ Athlon X2 CPU ,4gb Mushkin at 800Ghz , an ASUS EN8800GT 1Gb,and an Antec EarthWatts at 380 Watts.
A Seagate baraccuda 500gb.
Dvd,floppy,all in a Nexus catterpillar.
The case has 2x 120mm fans.
My problem is the next one....after instaling Windows Xp sp2,i instalesd a utility called ASUS Pc Probe II i realised that there is a problem with the big temperature of the motherboard.Checked the temperature in Bios and also used Everest.The same.My motherboard stays at 45-50 C in idle.
I had before this a other pc...the only things changed where the video....a ASUS 8600GTS 256,and 2 gb of RAM Samsung 667.
There...the temperature stayed on the motherboard ussualy at 30-37.
So...I guess something is wrong with my new pc.
Curios is that all my other parts are cold....all the fans work.
Right now i started the pc...it had 42c and in 5 min gone up to 50.
i will try to post a screenshot with the temp in my pc.
home someone can help me...because i am running out of ideas.

I have had similar problems with ASUS motherboards( among others)in that the temp probe on the motherboard does NOT read correctly and always shows a high temp( and even goes up and down in temp readings too). I am lucky that i have a friend that used a infrared camera where he works to find hot spots in electrical panels at large factory's. I used his camera to verify that the motherboard temp was actually 30°C when the bios was showing 49°C.

If you are really worried about it you can find people that will image your computer. This is not cheap because the cameras cost from $3500 to $9000 each.

I touched the centre and the edge sectors of the motherboard, and actually didn't seem as hot as PC Probe II shows.
I'm using Everest Ultimate Edition, and unfortunately it shows same 49-50 degrees C.

Are there any Bios settings, among hardware monitoring? I don't think I can change fan speeds from there.

And - most importantly - what can happen if the mobo overheats way too much? What gets broken?
I'm not interested in my mobo, so much as in my ram and graphics card...

Need a couple of opinions ...

And another fun fact to ask.is the power suply enought? do i need more than 380...?
this is something that bugges me for the last several days.

while it will get you by, it is a bit underpowered. I don't build any computer nowadays that does not have at least a 550-600 Watt Quality power output. I prefer the seasonic, or PC Power & Cooling, or Silverstone PS's Lately tho i thinK the PC power and Silverstones has cheapened their PS's so i stick with the seasonics for now.

Ok...i understand that is underpowered....i ask you then...why is it so hot?
For me this doesn't make sense.What exactly would change if i get a bigger power source?
Will it be safer? will it not get hot?
I still cannot figure out what the problem is.

getting it from a different angle...i used extreme power supply calculator lite and it showed me that i need a 265 watt source.
In my mind...i guess it should be something with the mobo.
1)it does not show the right temperature
2)something is wrong with it.
If something is wrong...and it is overheated....what can happen?can my video card,or ram be damaged?

Ok...I tried to touch the both my mobo's.
The one that detects a 30C and the 50+C mobo.
They seem to be equal temperatures.

Again...can that zone inflict high temperatures in only 5 min?
what's the chance that it does not "read" the correct temperature?
