Baldurs Gate not a valid win32 app

I'm trying to run an old game on XP but keep getting an error message 'D:/Setup is not a valid Win32 application'
The game is kosher but of pensionable age (Baldurs Gate 2) Any advice welcome!

Try updating your Windows Installer if you haven't already.

didnt work!!
I'm running SP2 so the updater keeps telling me the version I've already got is the latest version
Are there any dangers involved in running 'sfc /scannow' to check for a corrupted file?
Otherwise goodbye Sword Coast!

Try right clicking -> properties -> compatibility mode tab. Here is a screen shot of the properties menu:

changed compatibility and it works ...........just packing bags - wheres me +3 sword, gauntlets of dexterity etc
