Hi geeks. I am somewhat adept on a computer but this is way beyond my skill level. When I try to connect through the ethernet cable to a router (model: Motorola SB512), I get "limited or no connectivity." It cannot repair the connection because it for whatever reason cannot renew the IP address. The computer is BRAND NEW and my old computer did fine, as does another computer, but my new computer (and my friend's computer) do this limited or no connectivity business.

A lot of people have this problem - but I have noticed that the other threads all have some characteristic different than my problem, or they get too advanced and I don't understand , or frankly I just need someone to look at MY information and see if they can't help ME out.

Before we start making fun of the dumb girl, things I have tried:
1. Power cycling router/computer
2. Verifying that cable and ethernet work at other locations
3. Renewing IP Address (doesn't work)
4. Resetting winsock
5. Talking to Microsoft (completely not helpful)
6. Talking to Motorola (blaming Microsoft)

Have you tried running the network setup wizard?

I'll see if I can help you with this. First, though, I need some information.

Are you trying to connect wireless or wired?

Is there any other computers on this router that do work?

Does this computer work on a known working network?

Just how exactly did you do this?
There's 2 ways to renew the IP.
(1) Through the "Repair" button in the network properties.
(2) Through the command line.

If you did it through (1) you might want to consider using method (2).
Follow the below steps.

Lets renew your connection to the gateway.

1. Go to Start -> Run.
2. In the Box, type in "cmd".
3. A black box will appear. Type in: "ipconfig /release".
4. After it is done releasing. Type in: "ipconfig /renew".
5. This should renew your connection with your gateway.

Ok to answer these questions, I am trying to connect wired, other computers work through this router, both wired and wireless, (the cable is fine because I've used it to wire other computers that work) and the computer works on other wireless networks - I haven't had the opportunity to try to plug it into a LAN anywhere else.

Also, as far as renewing the IP address, I have tried both repairing the connection and going through the command prompt. With the command prompt, this is what I get:

I also tried the network setup wizard like SmileyXX suggested but it didn't make a difference.

Could you repeat the ipconfig on one of the other working computers please.

You say you're trying to connect wired, yet your ipconfig describes wireless connection info. If you're actually wired to a router - you also listed a cable modem model for your router model so please confirm that you are or are not wired to a router - then you need to disable the wireless card in your computer. You can do that either through device manager or just physically remove the wireless card. And make sure you have an ethernet card or integrated ethernet connection that is enabled. Then reboot and post your ipconfig results.

ipconfig /all displays ALL information, ofcourse the wireless info is shown.
Turning it off wouldn't have any effect on what this user is experiencing.

Yes I understand it shows all, I was asking the poster to verify s/he is connecting wired and to disable the wireless cards because the error "limited or no connectivity" is, in my experience, typically a wireless error. If no wireless connection is being used, there's no point using the resources for the wireless and helps eliminate confusion.

And my primary issue is to verify if the connection is directly to the Motorola SB512, as posted, or to an actual router.

You ain't seen nothing yet.

Also

This indicates a DHCP error.
