Okay now I am through with windows ME and I want to upgrade to win XP but I need to know if my system will be able to use it. I read in another topic about microsofts program but it says not recommended for dial-up connections and I have that. it will take me 10 hours to download and with my provider it gives you five then you have to re-connect so if you know anything here are the specs of my computer that i know. Dell Dimension 4100 series, Intel inside pentium 3 processor, Win Me upgrade from Win 98, 128 MB Ram. so if you have info that Win Xp will function on my system please tell me thanks

Realistically the computer is so old that even to upgrade it to a level where XP will run satisfactory, you'd be better off putting the money towards a new system. This model is a Socket 370 machine, uses SDRAM memory and the technology is obsolete. Personally I don't think its worth spending any money on.

If you don't have the money for a new machine you might look around for a Dell Optiplex 240 or 260, there are a lot of them being replaced by businesses and available, they have a Pentium 4, between 1.5 and 2.66 ghz and usually include a fresh reinstall of XP Pro. You can pick one up for a hundred bucks or so, just the box with keyboard and mouse. Make sure you get the full tower if you want to expand it.

Howdy:

It sounds like you are going to download XP from somewhere, is that correct?

If so, from where as as far as I know, XP is not available as a legal download anywhere.

Just buy the install cd (retail version so you can move it to a newer system at some point in time). Also, you will need to upgrade your ram to at least 512. Also, there may not even be XP drivers available for your hardware - check the Dell website for those.

I would concur with the others. Your money would be better spent on a newer system rather than going through the expense of upgrading yours.

I though he was referring to the program that MS uses to test whether the computer is suitable for XP, which is why I didn't make any comment about it. I've never tried running it on dial up.
