OS: wins XP

Hi, I am not sure if I am on the right forum but no doubt will be informed if I am not. I have had lots of trouble with my PC and now it has died on me. I am using wins Xp pro but on boot-up my PC informs me that I have a corrupt system 32 error, which means that I cannot get into windows. As I do not have the recovery windows disc and cannot repair the corrupt file, I am wondering if anyone knows of any hard disc file recovery software that would allow me to recovery and re-store my wins documents files (e.g. JPG, .doc). I have tried safe mode function but that has not worked. It seems to be an application problem rather than a hardware problem.

Thanks

Hello dan7brit,

What is the specific error? You will most likely require a windows CD in order to perform repairs.

How to run checkdisk from recovery console (Windows xp).
  1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Note:Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
  2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Note:If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
  3. When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
  4. At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following then press Enter:
    chkdsk /r
  5. Allow this to run UNDISTURBED until completed (45 min or so)
  6. Report any errors

After that we may need to repair your windows xp install. Please let me know how it goes. I have several steps to offer after this is performed.

hi, Thanks for the replies, but, the problem I have is that I do not have a start up /recovery disc! So repairing the system32/config error by this means is a no-no. I have perused the site and found that I can transfer the old files to a new hard drive by means of a slave-master system. But, if there is an easier application based way that I can repair the corrupt configuration file than the more the better.
