I've recently started getting an error message when starting windows vista. A blank ms dos screen appears then an error message which says:

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem

C:\Windows\System32\MSLATE~1.EXE
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:11f9 IP:01c6 OP:63 65 6e 74 65 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

How can I stop this from happening? This only started happening after I installed ConvertXtoDVD program off mininova. I've uninstalled it but still getting error message..... is this a virus?

More than likely there is a registry entry for the converter program, and now that the program is gone, when the computer starts up the registry entry looks for the converter program.

You can deal with this in 2 ways. You can Type MSCONFIG in the search box and then press enter on your keyboard. You will then click Ok for admin permissions. You will need your admin name and password( if you set them up). Then you will go to the startup tab and scroll thru the programs And fins the one associated with the converter program. Disable the programs there. This does not get rid of the registry entry, it just tells windows to not run it at startup.

A second way it to go to the malware forum and see if they can help you remove the entry in the registry. A good hijack thois log would be nice to have ready if they ask for it there.
