OS: Vista

Old guy here who's now stuck with Vista on a new laptop. All of a sudden I have a file folder icon on my screen that says it's os.dat; properties states: 450 bytes, 4.0 KB, opens with Windows Shell Commor. I have no idea how I got it there or where to put it. I have a feeling I don't want to delete it. HELP. I someone can tell me where to place this, or what file it should be in I can probably do that.
