CPU Temperature Issue

OS: Windows XP

My computer has been abruptly shutting off for a few months now and each time after it restarts, the error page (from the Microsoft website) that launches either says the shutoff was because of a bad driver or it says that the error report was corrupt. I heard on a radio talkshow that immediate shutdowns were usually because of thermal issues and I have downloaded "SpeedFan" to monitor the temp. The fans are functioning, although they do not seem to change speed once Windows fully loads. The CPU temp seldom goes above 60C and whenever the computer shuts off is so quick, I can never see what the temp is just prior to shutoff. How can I find and adjust the temp for shutoff? I've seen many sites indicate that this is in the bios but I've looked at the bios screen (after startup) and can find nothing there having anything to do with temperatures. The processors are two Intel Pentium® 4 CPU 3.00GHz on a Gateway 842GM running Windows XP Media. I'm rather new to this under the hood computer stuff and hope someone can guide me in the right direction. Thanks.
