Hey, one of my friends is having trouble with their computer and I'd appreciate it if you could help us. smile.gif

What's going on:
  • Computer running really slow.
  • Odd popups from travel agencies and other less than pure places; the bar says either "From Internet Speed Monitor" or "Powered bu ZED" or something like that.
  • Random songs playing while NOTHING is open. It's either the same rap song, a sonar sound, or fight noises. Sometimes dramatic instrumental music.
  • Certain sites wont load all the way, like Gmail, Myspace, WritersCafe.org, bbt.com.
  • Norton doesn't detect anything, although it says we are at risk. Our firewall is on but Norton keeps saying it is disabled (I have checked SEVERAL times to make sure it was on!)
  • Background changed from the normal picture I have to a blue screen warning us that spyware activity had been detected, that we were at risk and needed to download a program, but we already have Norton.
  • Running multiple programs is a real headache.
  • Often, Windows Explorer freezes

The background thing happened before, and we thought Norton had fixed it but since then we can only access Internet Explorer through the administrator account. The other (standard) accounts can't pull up Internet Explorer and won't connect Messenger or any other program to the Internet.

To prepare for this, we've tried everything in the "You Must Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log", but we couldn't do ERUNT and we're not sure about Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware since we already have an antivirus antimalware thing and don't want to make it worse.

Here's a Hijack this log for viewing pleasure tongue.gif

Hi,
Welcome to the site

I will be handling your log to help you get cleaned up. Please give me some time to look it over and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

I want you to show hidden files. There are instructions HERE to help you do this.
You should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Some of the instructions I give may need to be printed or saved for reference during the fix. Some of the fix will be done in Safe Mode so you will be unable to access this thread at that time.
Please dont use any of the tools without specific instructions. Some of them are dangerous (and could leave your computer in worse condition that it is when infected) if used incorrectly.
These instructions should be read first, then followed. If you do not understand something, don't be afraid to ask, or see if I'm on chat. smile.gif

Hi,
There is some nasty stuff on this computer, including password stealers. If you use internet banking on this machine, or paypal etc. you should change the passwords using a clean machine.

Did you add these sites to the Internet Explorer Trusted Zone?
http://z4.invisionfree.com
http://*.windowsupdate.com

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.

Click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

If Malware is found...
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
Please save it to your desktop.

NOTE: Logs can be retrieved at a later date from the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware main screen:

Thanks for all that, we'll try it out tomorrow. And nope, we've not added anything to the Trusted Zone. biggrin.gif

What I do know is that ebanking isn't working using the login details we've got at a clean computer. We'll have to get in touch with the bank, I guess.

Yeah, I would recommend cancelling your credit cards and telling the bank, they should have a 24 hour phone number for these things.

Okay, we've tried a HiJack this fix to remove the items you selected and we're no sure what happened. We did the scan and the fix, and then it went white, then it didn't do anything so we rebooted. As soon as we logged back on there was a popup.

We weren't sure whether to either retry, carry on to step 2 so we thought we'd ask you... we don't want to mess anything up tongue.gif

Here's a HJT log of what it looks like now, we sort of looked and some things looked like they'd gone.

Hi,
Go through it again and remove any of the lines in Hijack This that are still present. Then run step two, try not to reboot unless you have to.
