Hello,

I was asked by my father to get rid of a bunch of pop-ups he encounters when he starts up his laptop. It was difficult working on his computer because his system is running completely in Chinese text, which I cannot read. I attempted to change the language back to English, but I failed at that. After messing around with the computer in Chinese, I was able to figure out what program was creating the pop-ups and delete it. It was a firewall program, which I think ran out of trial time and was producing pop-ups asking my father to purchase the full product.

However, after I deleted the firewall program, I started have problems gaining access to the internet from his web browsers, Mozilla and IE. He uses a direct connection to the internet via Ethernet cord, and his MSN Messenger is able to connect and produce a buddy list when the Ethernet cord is connected. So I do think his laptop is able to access the internet. However, when I load both Mozilla and Firefox browsers, I keep getting the "The connection was reset" error message. No pages will load.

I'm afraid that I might have messed up his internet settings while I was either trying to change the language to English or when deleting the firewall program because I was unable to understand any of the Chinese text on his laptop. One thing I am sure of is that there is nothing wrong with the Ethernet cord because that same cord is connected to the laptop I'm currently using now.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated. My laptop is running in English, so I can do a test run of any advice with my laptop before messing around with my dad's laptop. Or if anyone can help me change the language back to English on his laptop, that would help tremendously, too.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. I found a thread started by someone who was having similar problems as mine. I followed the directions and opened CMD, typed "ping www.google.com" and there were replies. I don't know if that result helps at all to anyone helping me solve this problem, but here is the link to the old thread:
