Problem solved, I figured.....right. Later on, I hear a commercial coming from my PC and there are no windows open. I open up the Task manager and "iexplore.exe" is running. This seemed odd since I use firefox exclusively. I terminated the process and the commercial stopped. Then iexplore.exe pops up again in the task mangaer. I tried to go run House call on TrendMicro's website, but the virus wont let me connect. It takes me to a shopping site or says "firefox" cant connect. It did the samething when I tried to download google Chrome (newest webrowser). I had the presence of mind to immediateley clear my temp internet files and disabled my wireless connection. Luckily I have a laptop from work and a flash USB drive. I downloaded Prevx and isolated some of the iexplore's "buddies" it brought along, I installed smitfraudfix and hijack this and ran reports in safemode. It seems to have fixed somethings, but the internet is still hijacked, so I know the virus is still there. System restore doesn't work either, there are valid restore points, but when you select one, clicking the "next" button does nothing. Only "cancel" and "back" work. I don't think system restore will solve the problem anyway, but beggars can't be choosers. Everyone I spoke to says to reformat, but I don't have a bootdisk or anything. "thanks dell!" I am heading to buy an external HD after work to get my stuff secured. I did some reading on this bug...it's a beast. Gives remote hackers access to your files and passwords and stuff. Naturally I haven't done any online banking or even accessed email accounts on my PC. Thank God for that work laptop. The only way I can update my system seems to be through flash drives. I could really use some help. The following are hijack this logs ran after smitfraud in safemode. Hi there
The log looks clean, meaning we need to look a bit deeper. Please follow these steps in order, also run them in normal mode if possible. Download avz4.zip from here
Note: If you recieve an error message, chose a different source, then click Start again

I still don't see anything bad.
Let's do a general scan and see how it turns out. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Extra Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly. |

Hey Mike, it seems to have worked. I can now access the trend micro website and other anti virus sites. Just to be sure. Here is my log:

That's the rootkit I was hoping to weed out with AVZ.
Let's make sure it's gone. We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first. The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time. Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says: The Recovery Console was successfully installed. Please continue as follows:
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system: C:\ComboFix.txt New HijackThis log. |

Hey Mike, thanks again for the help. I am at home right now trying to get the windows recovery console to work. Since Dell didn't give me a windows CD I tried to boot the recovery console off a windows CD I got from a friend, but it prompted an error after connecting to the MS website. I think it's because the CD is windows xp pro and I am running the home version. This looks like it could take a while to download and setup bootdisk. I wlll be able to get it done quicker once I leave work this afternoon. Hopefully!

You can install the recovery console through ComboFix.
Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994 Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System ![]() Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe. ![]() Now close all open windows and programs, including all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log for further review. I'll wait for the reports |
