OS: windows xp

The problem im having is, norton internet security and windows update will not work. It seems they are disabled.. Norton shows that it is working properly, but i ran a panda scan earlier today, and it stated that norton is not working, and found about 14 threats. I keep getting a pop up telling me that windows updates is disabled, however when i go into my system settings, it shows that it is active. I can not connect to nortons tech site, or to windows tech sites, or update help. It just says that their are connectino problems. But this has been going on for like a week. I tried to run the malware removal tool you have posted in the "read first" forum, but it says my settings do not allow me to conect to that site. I have googled the problem, and read on a few differant pages that there is a virus out there that disables a lot of the security features, and makes it seem as though everything is working fine, but the PC is totaly volnerable.

What ive done so far, ran
1) Norton Internet security
2) Norton System works (get a message to fix active x controls, but it wont fix all of them)
3) The latest AVG (found 28 threats, but didnt give an option to fix or remove, norton update worked after but only finds the same tracking cookie it finds everyday after scanning again)
4) ATF cleaner
5) Erunt
6) Spybot S&D (found about 18 threats, but said couldnt remove all of them)
7) Hijack

Here is the Hijack log with all MSconfig start up options on:

Hello ccoffer,

Sorry for the delay.

Running two or more real-time anti-virus and firewall monitors at the same time can cause a conflict. That conflict could result in error messages, crashes of the programs or other types of failure. You will very likely end up with little or no protection.

Please uninstall either of Norton Symantec or AVG8.

Now

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VGA Driver] scmhost.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [VGA Driver] scmhost.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

-----Step 2-----

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

Kaspersky only works if you are using Internet Explorer.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.

Click on the Kaspersky Online Scanner button. A box will come up, click Accept, this will allow it to install an ActiveX component and download its latest anti-virus database. (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)

  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    * Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    * Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
    Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    * Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Lastly in this post

  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
