How can use any of the malware utilities when XP won't even boot [, Vundo virus and blue screen

Hi All,

I have been working on fixing a pc that simply won't get past a blue screen stop error 0x0000008e and win32k.sys.

It won't let you load safe mode, last known good config or anything.

I have performed chkdsk to no avail.

I have used recovery console and to no avail.

A friend gave me an old cd for WinInternals 2002 and this did load and let me view the event viewer and registry. In the system event viewer I found the following:

"File infection: vuhwtikb.dll is Win32/VundoCryptorJ!Generic Trojan"

I found some research relating to Vundo on Wikipedia that said most infected machines have MS Juan in the registry and this machine did have that. I deleted if from the registry.

In all the forums, everyone says to run combo fix or this fix but for my situation, I can't even load the OS to get in there and clean the system. I am not sure if the vundo is the source of the blue screen so I may be spinning my wheels.

Can anyone advise how to fix when you can't even get in? The Winnternals application can only let me do so much. I have spent days on this and I don't know what else to do.

Thanks for your help.
Tracy

Hi Tracy, you're best bet is to do a Windows repair or better yet, do a clean Windows install. If you want to do the latter (which I recommend), please make sure you backup those files first before you wipe it out. To do this, remove the hard drive on this computer and put it into another working computer as a slave drive so you can copy your files over. Make sure you have an antivirus program running and up-to-date on that other computer.
