I just recently loaded that Trend Micro AntiVirus AntiSpyware 2008 and SpySweeper about 2 weeks ago, did the CCleaner thing, defrag, heck....... just about everything I could find on the internet that's recommended. Here's my notepad from the instructions on your *-* read this first page *-* which I did exactly. I appreciate your help and will wait till I hear from sombody. Take care, Mary HijackThis Log 09-29-08 Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 10:47:02 PM, on 9/29/2008 Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16705) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EvtEng.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\S24EvMon.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\WLKeeper.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\ZcfgSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\Intel\Wireless\Bin\1XConfig.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\InterVideo\DeviceService\DevSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\LightScribe\LSSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\RegSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security\SfCtlCom.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SpySweeper.exe C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SpySweeperUI.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Distillr\acrotray.exe C:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exe C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security\UfSeAgnt.exe C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\BM\TMBMSRV.exe C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security\TmProxy.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Mary *****\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\S7TKEN2C\HiJackThis[1].exe R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896 R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896 R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.dell4me.com/myway R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Windows Internet Explorer provided by Yahoo! Hi,
Welcome to the site I will be handling your log to help you get cleaned up. Please give me some time to look it over and I will get back to you as soon as possible. I want you to show hidden files. There are instructions HERE to help you do this. You should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Some of the instructions I give may need to be printed or saved for reference during the fix. Some of the fix will be done in Safe Mode so you will be unable to access this thread at that time. Please dont use any of the tools without specific instructions. Some of them are dangerous (and could leave your computer in worse condition that it is when infected) if used incorrectly. These instructions should be read first, then followed. If you do not understand something, don't be afraid to ask, or see if I'm on chat. |

1.
Updating Java and Clearing Cache
2. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan (Full scan is optional. According to the program's creator Quick Scan will do just fine.). Click Scan. When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. If Malware is found... Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to your desktop. NOTE: Logs can be retrieved at a later date from the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware main screen: Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Click the Logs tab. Double-click log-mm.dd.yyyy [xxxxxx].txt. In your next reply post the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log. |

Hi Sarah,
I was only to get thru step 1. You mentioned Java Plug In's under the icon, mine doesn't say that. I clicked the 2nd tab "Update" and on the bottom left is a "Update Now" button. I clicked that and then rebooted. Problem is, my computer never booted up. It just sits on that black screen forever. No error messages, nothing. Just a blank black screen. I wasn't able to do any of the other steps because of this. Btw, I have a work laptop that i'm emailing you back on. What should I do now? Hi Sarah,
After I rebooted from updating Java (note; I never had a Java Plug in under the icon, only the update now button which is what I clicked) my computer showed me the quick Windows XP flash screen then goes to a black screen and stays there in la la land never loading to my desktop. I can hear the (what I think is) the hard drive working like it's going to go to my desktop but it never does. I hope this gives you a better understanding of where I'm stuck at. Not sure if me not seeing the words Java Plug In mean anything or not. Thank you again! Mary |

Ok, I want you to boot into safe mode and try a System Restore. If you do not have any restore points, let me know.
1. Click Start. 2. Point to All Programs. 3. Point to Accessories. 4. Point to System Tools. 5. Click System Restore. 6. Follow the instructions on the wizard to restore your computer to a date before you had any of these problems. When it is finnished it should reboot your computer. Tell me if it loads ok in norma mode. |

It restored ok. I restored it to the day before I began my post on GeeksToGo. So I have my desktop back. I wanted to ask you a couple of questions i'm cuurious about.
1. Why does GeeksToGo have users download and run all of those programs before having them post their HiJackThis report? Like ATF Cleaner, ERUNT, and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Is it to shorten the mess of the HiJackThis log that's reviewed? The only reason i'm asking is because I just recently loaded Trend Micro AntiVirus AntiSpyware 2008, SpySweeper, CCleaner, defrag, etc. I've always wondered if too many spyware virus protection could slow you down to. 2. What do you think went wrong with that Java update I did? Would it of had anything to do with me not seeing that Java PlugIn you mentioned? Thank you very much! Mary |

Hi,
Good to hear. I'm not exactly sure what happened there, you'r computer is still likely infected, which is probably the cause. Quite strange. We run all those programs to see if users can clear up simple problems by themselves before posting a Hijack This log. Sometimes they can be fixed easily, sometimes not. Personally, I just recommend Erunt backup, then post the Hijack This log. I can tell you which scans to run. Can you continue with the MBAM scan in post #5. |
