You must reinstall windows then... a required .dll file c:\windows\system\msvcrt.dll was not found I went through steps to extract the file and get a message: Error: cannot open file I can not start Windows at all, it just gets stuck on this message. Hello michytwichy...
Do you have the Win98 Installations cd? Is it a retail version or an OEM (Dell/HP/IBM)? wannabe1 |

Yes, a windows 98 CD. It says on the CD "for distribution with a new PC only", so I am not sure.
I also have a floppy that we must have made...It's handwritten windows 98 start up, which I think we made when we first got the computer so long ago. I know it's not Dell or IBM This post has been edited by michytwichy: Jan 18 2006, 08:13 PM |

michytwichy...
What you have should work just fine. We'll try an overlay...Win98 is one of the few operating systems that will let you get away with that...sometimes it takes a little coaxing, but it can be done. Hopefully, without loosing your data. Let me know when you ar ready to do this...it will take a little time. wannabe1 |

Ok...good
Put the installation cd in the drive and hold the Shift key down while it detects the disk...this should disable the autostart. Open My Computer and right click on the cd drive...choose "Explore" From the files in the resulting window, double click on setup.exe This will start the installation of Win98...let it install normally. Doing this procedure will not format the HDD and your data should remain intact...no guarantee on that, but 99% this is the case. If you run into a problem, I'll be right here... wannabe1 |

No good. The biggest roadblock is I can't even get past the error message...no icons, no start menu, nothing..the only thing I can do is get to the DOS? screen.

Plan B...
Put the floppy you have in the drive and press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to restart. When you get to the black screen with three options on it...Press the Shift key and F5 at the same time. There will be a short delay, then you should get a command prompt...A:\ Let me know when you get to that prompt. |

Sorry...I was replying to a thread in the XP forum....
Type E:setup.exe Let me know if you get an invalid drive specification error or if the installation begins. |
