I recently upgraded to a faster processor a 2.5 ghz... now when I try to run windows I get a windows protection error NDIS.. Microsoft says there is a fix.. anyone know what it is? I have Win 2k on my system now but would like to have both systems on this machine. Hoping someone can help.. I sure would hate to pay Microsoft 35 bucks.

I've attached the file you need... (see bottom of this post)

SYMPTOMS
When you are installing Windows 95 or Windows 98 on a computer that has a CPU that runs at 2.2 gigahertz (GHz) or faster, you may receive the following error message:
While initializing device NDIS: Windows protection error

CAUSE
The timing calibration code in the Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) driver causes a divide by zero if the CPU runs at 2.2 GHz or faster. This problem does not occur with CPUs that run at 2.1 GHz or slower.

Instructions for the attached file: (printable view)
Note: This file was originally packaged in a Zip file from Microsoft.
The file was password protected therefore only the resulting executable
is included here. This patch is for Windows 98.

Start the target system in Safe-Mode and run the executable. It will replace
the existing ndis.vxd with a fixed version.

Once the patch is applied, when subsequent changes are made to the network
properties of the target system, be sure NOT to let it replace the patched
ndis.vxd file. If this file is replaced, you will need to re-run the patch.

Note: The following text is the original text file included in the zip file.
There is no hfx.exe and item #1 can be disregarded.
