hi i just joined this site today and would be very grateful for your help as i've exhausted all means within my capacity to solve my problem.

i'm not too sure how i got my virus/spyware, all i know is i've opened a .htm attachment (zipped, and if my memory isn't failing it should be called nsvdcw.htm) from [email protected] (which is apparently a spam after confirmation with yahoo) and, being paranoid, downloaded kaspersky lab from www.download.com. after that, i've noticed many programs like 180search assistant, media access, internet optimizer, zango, etc surfacing (and unremovable!) in my computer.

i've tried ad-aware, xoftspy, spydoctor, fix180sh from norton and nothing works. i can't visit anti-virus websites like symantec and mcafee either (i've figured from forums to fix it but it resurfaces after a reboot). my computer speed is also significantly slower and i also can't open regedit under start>run and task manager.

i'm totally new and i see that users here often paste a hijackthis scan log here as a start so i downloaded it too and here's my log. please revert back to me soon, i'm really helpless. much thanks!

Hello Vicki and welcome to Geeks to Go

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

i can't install service pack 1a (probably cause i'm using a pirated copy), so what can i do then?

anyway before your reply my regedit could open up again (after a xoftspy scan) and i had to edit my hosts file before i could visit microsoft page. just updating you.

please let me know what else can i do since i couldn't instal 1a (the previous prompts on my comp to install service pack 2 had been unsuccessful too).

Hello Vicki

You may be correct in your thinking about being unable to update with service packs.

I'm sorry that I can not be of any further assistance to you since it is against our policy to help anyone who does not have a valid copy of Windows.

Thank you for understanding, and for your cooperation.
