Acer TravelMate Laptop Battery Problem

OS: Windows XP
I bought my brother a Acer TravelMate Refurbished Laptop. It works if the battery is out and it's just on the charger but when I put the battery it, it says it's low. I just bought it so I can take it back to the shop which I intent to, but I want to know what might cause this problem. I am thinking Motherboard problem?

Could be something wrong with the battery. Could also be the motherboard I guess too, as it would be in control of monitoring the battery level through the BIOS.
