When i boot up my computer and the icons have loaded i recieve four windows, every time first...."Windows installer attempting to install" Then another one layered on top of that "Norton does not support the repair feature" After this both windows close. What does this mean? is it harmful? Next a window pops up saying "Publisher could not be verified, are you sure you want to run this software? Name: system32.exe Publisher: unkown Type: application From: C:\windows\system32" the two options are run and cancel, i have always chosen cancel. The exact same box pops up when this one is closed, upon closing the second box, there are no more. Is system32.exe dangerous? if so how can i rid of it? I am running windows xp with all the updates along with Norton anti-virus, which i have run several scans, all amounting to nothing. All help will be greatly appreciated. :tazz:

Hi cbm487 and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

I apologize for the delay getting to your log, the helpers here are very busy.
If you still need help, please post a fresh Hijack log so I can help you with your Malware Problems.

system32.exe may very well be the TROJ_SUA.A Trojan. I need to see your HijackThis log to verify this.

Thanks,

:tazz:

Here's my log as of Monday night. Thoguht i might add i went to symantec's website and searched for the specified trojan, these were the instructions: Manual removal
This should be used only if the tool does not work or if you cannot obtain it.

Here is an overview of the steps that are required to remove Backdoor.Autoupder (detailed instructions follow):

Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP only)
Configure Windows to show all files
Delete temporary files and empty the Recycle Bin
Restart the computer in Safe mode
Delete files that are detected as Backdoor.Autoupder
Remove the values and keys that the Backdoor.Autoupder added to the registry

^^my question is should i refer to symantecs directions for the solving of problems once the problem has been identified? and why didnt my norton antivirus not pick this up? thanks

Hi cbm487 and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://rd.yahoo.com/.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://rd.yahoo.com/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://rd.yahoo.com/...hoo.sbc.com/dsl
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://rd.yahoo.com/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://rd.yahoo.com/.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://rd.yahoo.com/...//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://rd.yahoo.com/...hoo.sbc.com/dsl
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://rd.yahoo.com/...//www.yahoo.com
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System Support] system32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [System Support] system32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [System Support] system32.exe

7. click the Fix Checked box

8. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

system32.exe <-------start>search to find this

9. Run the program CleanUp!

10. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

13. Please post the Active scan log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

Hi cbm487,

Please run the online virus scan form the link I provided.(when you get to that step :tazz:) Although Norton is a fine program, all Anti-Virus programs do not pick up every single thing out there, better to double check with another scanner.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://rd.yahoo.com/.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://rd.yahoo.com/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://rd.yahoo.com/...//www.yahoo.com
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [System Support] system32.exe

7. click the Fix Checked box

8. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

In order to do this, click Start (on the bottom of your desktop) Then click on search. Then click on all files and folders. then in "all or part of the file name" type in System32.exe. When it finds it, right click on the file and hit delete.

system32.exe <-------start>search to find this

9. Run the program CleanUp!

10. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

13. Please post the Active scan log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

^^ my results from the scan. As for 8. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

system32.exe <-------start>search to find this/// i looked in both system 32 folders and everything inside seemed to be important/not a threat. Almost everyhting was either written by microsoft or last edited a year ago, before i bought the computer, so i took no action there. Here is my new HJT log and i still could not find...they only appear when i scan in normal mode :tazz:

Hi cbm487,

Please check those hijackthis items off in regular mode....Thanks. ;)

I need you to double check that you have your hidden files/folder unhidden.
Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

click Start (on the bottom of your desktop) Then click on search. Then click on all files and folders. the use the pull down meny below this and make sure the top 3 boxes have a check next to it. then in "all or part of the file name" type in System32.exe. When it finds it, right click on the file and hit delete.

Let me know how this works.

Thanks,

:tazz:

My Pleasure ;)

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE

Spybot S&D

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4

Spywareguard

IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:

Sygate

Kerio

ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox

Opera

This site is a great source for tightening up security on Internet Explorer settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.
