Hi folks...
I cant seem to get past my log on screen, dont know what i have done here.
tried safe mode but did not work. I have a recovery disk, but too sure what i am doing with it.
any help is greatly appreciated.

What happens when you attempt to log in?

it logs me out back to windows "welcome screen"

I tried to copy userinit.exe to wasupdater.exe as per another poster here had recommended, but it was a post from like 2006, jusst learning how to use recovery disk was enough to confuse me hehehe...

any thoughts?

Hello,
I just want to jump in to ask if you meant recovery console here .
The recovery disc will reset the machine to factory condition, meening you will lose ALL of your data!
Please use care.
Have you tried to press F8 at boot to enter the start up options menu?
Please do so and select last known good configuration.

Yes I meant recovery console , sorry for miss-guiding.
first thing I tried to get in was I started the system in safe mode, but still got logged out after logging in at the xp welcome screen, it is immediate.
2nd time tried "last known good configuration" and samething, logged me out after clicking on Log in icon.
I then did some online searching (another computer ofcourse) on this problem.
I then booted using the recovery console and cd that came from manufacteurer, a suggestion from another post from years gone by....to copy USERINIT.EXE to WSAUPDATER.EXE, apparently there was a virus that changed or erased userinit.exe?
this did not work either.
Found another few posts recommend BARTPE software.
I have since made a copy of BartPE, but really who am I kidding, I dont know what to do with the darn thing.
and this is where I am at.
My wife will kill me if I wipe out all our Pictures on the computer....I am in the dog house......

When you try to boot in to safe mode do you have more than one user to boot in to?
If we can take the hard drive out of this machine and put it in as a slave drive in another machine we can transfer your data so that there is no risk of losing your pictures.
Do you know how to do this?

I Have 2 accounts set-up, although we never have used the 2nd one (for my wife) she just log into my account.... I have never done a hard drive move before, I read the instructions you posted thanks, seems straight forward, now if I only had another computer LOL....I am using a Dell laptop right now to access the internet.

If I enter recovery console with manufacteur's cd can I re-load windows without losing data? I see the option for set-up and the option for repair.
What do you think?

You will lose all data if you use your recovery disc.
That said, try the repair, use the command fixmbr (no space)
Do not do a system recovery!

I think a new computer would be cheaper

The only risk is that I am afraid that it is not going to work.
If it does not try chkdsk /r

Message is

"this computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record"

do I wanna.....blah blah blah.......

"are you sure you want to write a new MBR?"

Yes, that is the whole issue....

Ok so I type a "y" and enter then???

Y and enter

"the new master boot record has been successfully written"

I take it I now exit and re-boot?
