Avi files stopped working

Hello,

I recently updated my computer to service pack three and around that time all of my avi files stopped working. Now they will open for a couple seconds display a green screen then the program has an error and needs to quit. it happens in every player including vlc. I thought it might be a codec problem so i uninstalled all my codecs and restarted. When that did not work i uninstalled the service pack 3 and still no joy.
