hi, geeks to go. im back. i havent had any prolems with my computer since the last time about a year ago but now im having a problem with my cd writer, a BENQ 5232x. im not sure when it started malfunctioning but when i use nero to burn cds. music cds whether it is copying cds or using mp3 files it does not go thru. it starts the burning and after about 30 seconds i get the message "no seek complete" and it says burning failed. im pretty sure i went to the benq site and downloaded the new firm ware. but i dont want to try anythin else on my own for fear of making it worse. any ideas? thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to Geeks to Go. There are three things I would try. 1) try cleaning the optical lens 2) check for a software update to your Nero product at their web page 3) check for a firmware update on your drive.

ok, i downloaded the nero upgrade. and now my drive doesnt show up when i get to the burning process. or under the list of drives. ive attempted to download the firmware again but i dont not know which benq 5232 i have.. whether its p, w, or etc. is there a way i can tell? hopefully after that this drive will be working again.

Click start, right click my computer, click properties, hardware, device manager, click the + for CD / DVD Drives, does it list it there

The error is this

Maybe re-installing Nero will help

yes. that did restore the drive on my computer thank you. i tried to make a cd again. and received the same error (no seek complete) after updating nero. what should i try now? reinstallation? im still unsure if i downloaded the correct firmware. my computer said the version im running is the kpcy firmware.

Try using re-writeable discs until the PC burns correctly

i get "error on writing disc" when i try to use the cdburner xp pro. and then the program stops responding.

What is the capacity of the disc, how old is the writer drive, have you tried using a slower burning speed

Does device manager give the make and model

the disc i am using is a tdk 52x. cd-r. 700mb. the writer drive was purchsed in the fall of 2005. so its just over a year old..maybe a year and a half. yeah i never burn at the highest speed. so i tried 36x, 32x and even 8x. i did not try 8x on the cd burner program you just gave me.

and yes the device manager says BENQ CDRW 5232X.

i dont know if this will help..but neither one of those drivers worked. when i went to flash the drive like it says.. it would not go thru. it says my drive is using a KPCY driver next to the name and model number. is there anything else i can do? or do you think i need to take the computer in to the shop where i had it built?
