Ok bad, news. I did a cold reboot and the computer doesn't seem to be loading the desktop. It shows the cursor, and a Microsoft Windows XP screen. What did I do wrong?!


Edit: Did safe mode.


I think my computer is wiped out now. Nothing loads.


Desktop does not display upon start up.

Is it because explorer.exe was removed?


Also, when I start up there is another option of the System Restore Console thing, should I select that?

Alright, even worse news.

When I start the computer, it prompts me to select my start up mode.

I select Safe mode, it loads up a bunch of lines.

And then it restarts and opens to the start up again. So I can't even access my desktop.

Try to reboot using the Last Known Good Configuration option, on the black & white Boot Screen, you pick Safe Mode in

I selected that (it's above normal mode right?) and it doesn't work. Just brings me back to the start again. I can't boot to my desktop. Should I select that Windows Recovery link?

There is something very odd going on, none of the files deleted/moved during that fix, have anything to do with the PC's ability to boot.

So, we need to boot to the recovery console to check that hard disc

Boot into the Recovery Console option at the Startup Screen

1. When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
2. At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following then press Enter:

chkdsk /r

Note the space between k & /

3. Allow this to run UNDISTURBED until completed (45 min or so)
4. Report any errors

Hi, I will try that out once I have access to my desktop.

Just in case, what happens if I cannot select the recovery console.

What has been happening is when it loads onto the Windows XP screen with the bar loading, you do not see the blue bar moving across, and so that screen only flashes for a second, then it repeats back into the startup again and it is a cycle.

I was doing some research elsewhere and found that I might need to use the XP CD for cases like this. I believe I might have misplaced it.

Right now, nothing seems to be responding, when I select Normal mode, goes back, when I select Safe mode, goes back to the beginning.

Upon start up, it says to press 'del' to send me to a setup screen. That seems to be the only thing that kind of functions.

I have a blue screen of death.

ComboFix loaded the Recovery Console onto your PC & you should have the option of booting to the Recovery Console or to Windows.
Can you get to the Recovery Console window?

I did some research, I think I have a NTFS error and that is like a crucial part for Windows to read everything I believe. Like you said in your previous post, I had it prior to installing ComboFix.

I think it requires the use of a Recovery/XP CD or along similar lines of that.

I hope this problem can be fixed.

It just keeps going in circles restarting and going back to the start again. I never really get to load past the Windows XP screen with the blue bar. When I do the recovery console, I get a Windows stop Message.

If you then try to boot to the Recovery Console, you get the Stop Message. Yes/No
Is there any other information on the Blue Screen Window, or is it just that single line of text?

Can you borrow a WinXP SP2 CD?
Is the PC a "name brand", like HP, Dell etc.
If so what is the model number? Should be on a sticker on the case somewhere.

I probably have one somewhere, but just need to find it. If not, I can probably borrow from someone.

Will this require me to lose all of my files if I have to reformat?

We are not saying the "F" word yet!! (format)
What we are trying to achieve is either:
1. Access the Recovery Console via the WinXP CD, to perform a chkdsk run on the hard drive.
2. A repair of the registry to enable us to boot.
3. A repair installation of Windows, (all data & programs stay in place)
4. A "clean" installation of Windows, (data stays in place, but software needs to be reloaded)
We really need the WinXP SP2 CD, to do any of this.

I have someone that can get me a CD this Saturday so is it ok if we wait until then to proceed?
