Hi jaymc and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

BEFORE BEGINNING, Please read completely through the instructions below and download the files from the links provided. You may want to save or print out these instructions for easier reference.

1. Download Ewido Security Suite.

2. Download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and the VX2 Cleaner Plug-in.
  • Install Ad-Aware using the default options.
  • Then install vx2cleaner_inst.exe, using all the defaults there as well.

3. Run Ad-Aware
  • Update to the latest definitions
  • Then click on Add-ons in the lefthand column.
  • Select VX2 Cleaner V2.0 and click Run Tool. Click "OK".
  • If something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given.
  • Click "Close", and EXIT Ad-Aware.

4. Reboot your PC and run Ad-Aware again.
  • This time, click on the Start button in Ad-Aware
  • Select "Perform smart system scan" and click Next.
  • Once the scan finishes, click "Next" again.
  • Select all objects found ("right click anywhere in the list of found objects and click "Select All Objects").
  • Click "Next" one more time, then "OK" to confirm the removal.
  • You will be prompted to set Ad-Aware to run on reboot, click "OK".
  • Exit [B]Ad-Aware[/B]
  • REBOOT your PC
  • When Ad-Aware starts up, click on "Start", then "Next".
  • Follow the steps above if anything is found, or click "Finish", then EXIT Ad-Aware.

5. For a final cleanup, please install and run Ewido.
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  5. Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  6. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
  7. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

6. Please finish up by rebooting your system once more, and posting a new HijackThis log and the log from the Ewido scan.

Regards,

Trevuren

Thanks for your help. I'm unable to install Ewido. When I attempt to run the installation, I get an error that says the installation and/or update failed and to uninstall, reboot, and try again. I follow those directions, but get the same error message.

Here's the logfile from hjt:

OK, we will do it manually.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad . Make sure to work through the steps in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fix.
  • Download DSRFIX from HERE onto your Desktop.
    • Unzip and EXTRACT the files to your Desktop.
    • The program creates and names the new folder to house the files.
    • DO NOT RUN IT YET

  • Download Cleanup from Here (Alternate site if the above is not working Go Here)
    • A window will open and choose SAVE, then DESKTOP as the destination.
    • On your Desktop, click on Cleanup40.exe icon.
    • Then, click RUN and place a checkmark beside "I Agree"
    • Then click NEXT followed by START and OK.
    • A window will appear with many choices, keep all the defaults as set when the Slide Bar to the left is set to Standard Quality.
    • Click OK
    • DO NOT RUN IT YET

  • CLOSE INTERNET EXPLORER, if it is open

  • Open the folder dsrfix
    • Double click on the dsrfix batch file( the one with the little gear in it )
    • Once dsrfix has completed it will close on its own

  • Run Cleanup
    • Click on the "Cleanup" button and let it run.
    • Once its done, close the program.

  • REBOOT your system.

  • Please restart HJT and post back a fresh HJT log for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

We want to stop, disable and delete an added service (023)

A. To stop a service and set to 'disabled'
  1. Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK
  2. Click the Extended tab.
  3. Scroll down until you find the service.
    ===>System Startup Service
  4. Click once on the service to highlight it.
  5. Click Stop
  6. Right-Click on the service.
  7. Click on 'Properties'
  8. Select the 'General' tab
  9. Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box
  10. From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'
  11. Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.

B. We will now delete the service:

1. Open HJT

2. Click on Config>>Misc Tools>>Delete an NT Service

3. Copy/Paste SvcProc in the space provided and click OK

4. The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept

5. REBOOT into SAFE MODE

6. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file (if it still is present):

C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

7. REBOOT back into Normal Mode

8. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

I ocntacted Best Offers Networks and requested to have their software removed from my system. I did some research on the company and their user agreeements and had enough confidence to actually run their program. Their response is below. I ran their uninstall and it seems to have taken care of the problem. We'll see for how long. The latest HJT logfile is below.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  1. We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
    • Open My Computer.
    • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    • Select the View Tab.
    • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    • Click Yes to confirm.
    • Click OK.

  2. Please RUN HijackThis, click the SCAN button to produce a log.
    • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

      O2 - BHO: Internet Explorer Web Content Catcher - {FFF4E223-7019-4ce7-BE03-D7D3C8CCE884} - C:\Program Files\DNS\Catcher.dll
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateMgr.exe] "C:\Program Files\EarthLink 5.0\updatemgr.exe" /NOCM
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Spooler SubSystem App] C:\WINNT\system32\spooIsv.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Services] C:\WINNT\system32\system.exe
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [services32] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Windows\mc-58-12-0000133.exe
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DNS] C:\Program Files\Common Files\mc-58-12-0000133.exe
      O16 - DPF: {36E4E9BC-4D0C-41B4-90C9-37AFDBFAAD3C} (InforbitHelper Class) - http://download.infotriever.com/bin/ifhelper.cab
      O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/08a32b511736e2...ip/RdxIE601.cab

    • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, DELETE them by clicking the FIX checked button and EXIT the program.

  3. Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How To Start To Safe Mode In Windows 2000
    • Turn the computer on
    • When you see the black-and-white Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen, start tapping the F8 key.
    • The Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu will appear.
    • Choose the Safe mode option. (it is usually the first item in the list).
    • Use the arrow keys to select it if it is not selected by default.
    • Press Enter. The computer will start in Safe mode.
    • When finished troubleshooting, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.

  4. Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders (with all their content), and DELETE them (if they are present):

    C:\Program Files\EarthLink 5.0<==Folder
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Windows\services32.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\services.exe
    C:\Program Files\DNS\Catcher.dll
    C:\WINNT\system32\spooIsv.exe
    C:\WINNT\system32\system.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Windows\mc-58-12-0000133.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mc-58-12-0000133.exe

  5. Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  6. Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.

Regards,

Trevuren
