Please help us!

We have run several anti-spyware and anti-malware programs, and have apparently eliminated many viruses, etc. but our desktop background is still not under our control. It is solid blue, and the control panel in displays will not allow us to change it back to any picture or pattern.

We are concerned that other system functions may be hijacked, but have not noticed other misbehavior.

Yesterday we were infected with Secure32.html and today we had a few messages from our McAffee program that it had detected the trojan Downloader-AFH.

Any help that you can provide would be welcome!

Hello JJnGG,

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

1. Restart your computer
2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log in your next reply.

Run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
• You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
• If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Before reading your reply, we had followed most of the steps that you mentioned and the blue screen desktop problem was fixed. We re-ran everything to generate some reports for you to see (below). Our Panda report shows a few remaining adware programs. Are these harmful? If so , how can we get rid of them?

The Ewido report showed no problems found, although we were not able to run it in safe mode, because the UI is unreadable and buttons are broken in safe mode. It seems to work fine under regular windows mode.

Please open Hijackthis, scan, and place a checkmark by the following entries:

Close all open windows/browsers and click Fix Checked.

Exit Hijackthis.

Then we will need to show hidden files:

• Click Start.
• Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• Select the View Tab.
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
• Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
• Click Yes to confirm.
• Click OK.

Then delete the following files using windows explorer:

C:\WINDOWS\kwv2.dat
C:\WINDOWS\sepsd.bin

If you get an error message then you will need to delete them in safe mode.

(Tap F8 as your computer starts up, select safe mode from the list that appears.)

How is your computer running?

We followed your instructions above and our computer seems to be running great now. We re-ran Panda ActiveScan and it found nothing.
