Boot Disc Failure......

1st and foremost My name is Ryan... I am new here and want to say Howdy to all first..

Now .. My Issue.

Hopefully this problem is easily fixed cause I have been searching in forum after forum

I was given a computer for my GF. It is a older computer SONY VAIO.
It had no hard drive IN the machine, he gave me one with it and said I could
install this drive and run a Windows install and should be to go!!!!

So I install the HD and got the Windows XP disc in the drive and I got the error...

DISK BOOT FAILURE INSERT SYSTEM DISC AND HIT ENTER...

now all the forums I have found state that you put the disc in and repair... But what happends if you do not have a OS installed and get this message?

I tried to format the drive by hooking it up as a SLAVE in my Vista system and was unable to read from it.... I used a different drive that I formatted and nothing.

I get a screen that shows IDE devices and then it goes to a screen that says
PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT

I have been at this for a week now.. Please? ANY help would be awesome.

BIOS is set up and I cannot update without a OS if I remember right

What does this mean? Did you change the boot sequence so that the cdrom is first boot device and the hard drive is second?
Did you then click F10 to Save and Exit?
You would then be asked to click Y to Verify Save and Exit
Once that was done then the system would auto reboot and you should see a message that says Push any key to boot to cdrom
If not then something is not setup correctly.
Is the XP cd a Genuine Microsoft Xp or a burned copy?
Is it a full version or upgrade?
Is it a Recovery disk?

Yes CD-Rom is 1st boot device
Yes the Hard Drive is the 2nd boot device

XP cd is genuine Not a burn or copy....
or a recovery disk...

and NO there was no
"Push any key to boot from cd message"

I meant that I am unable to update the BIOS with out using a OS interface, And was asking if that was correct.

and no I did not[b] click save.....cant use a mouse in the BIOS :) J/K

Don't use a mouse in the bios at all. Everything is through the keyboard. If you didn't save it then the system is still tryig to boot to the hard drive.
Another way you can do it is to go into the bios and there should be someplace that says Set to default or something like that. Highlight it and then click Enter
Make sure the XP cd is in the drive before you have it reboot

All that did not help.

Still in a Stuck position... Thank You for your suggestions,
At this point I'm thinking I'm screwed.....

There is no OS interface for the bios. It is the first thing that loads when you start your system. The OS has nothing to do with it at all.
If you can't get into it then something else is really wrong.
