CD/DVD player will not play

I have a Toshiba A205 S5843 laptop which is running Vista. When I bought it (brand new) about 2 years ago, the CD/DVD player worked fine, of course. Here lately, it has not worked in a few months.

I plug in a CD/DVD and it sounds like it is spinning but nothing will show up on the screen and no sounds or pics will play. After the tray is opened, you can still see it spinning and then it stops, so I know, it is working as far as turning goes.

Thanks for helping me with this issue!

Hello,
The CD/DVD drive may need to be cleaned or replaced. You can purchase a cleaning kit from almost any computer store. Just make sure to follow the directions. Or, the drive may have died, in which case you will have to replace it, or have someone replace it for you. Not much else you can do to troubleshoot this kind of problem.

Makai,

First off, thanks for helping me. This is certainly not the news I wanted to hear.

Makai, we have a CD cleaner we use for our stereo. Will that be usable in my laptop?

Yes, unfortunately, if the drive spins but doesn't read, it's normally dirty or the laser is dead. Not much else can go wrong. Your stereo CD cleaner will work fine. Again, just follow the directions on the package.

Does the CD drive show in Windows Explorer?
Can you read CD files through WE?

Hey Broni,

You have helped me in the past and hopefully, we can be successful again!

Can you walk me thru on the steps needed to make sure the player is showing up in WE, just so there is NO confusion on my part?

I am also having close to the same problem. My laptop is a Toshiba A215-S4757 and will read CDs but not DVDs. I am going to get a CD lens cleaner today and try that but doubt it will help. Any ideas such as is this a driver problem?

You need to start your own topic.

Put any CD/DVD into the drive.
Open Windows Explorer and see, if your DVD drive is listed there.
If so, click on that drive to check, if you can see any files on inserted CD/DVD.

Broni,

The best I can tell is this:

Devices with removable storage: DVD RW Drive: (D) Audio CD

When I click properties it shows: The disc is bright blue which means it is full. Also there is something shown as "file system" CDFS and "type" is CD Drive.

I hope this is what you were looking for.

Broni,

I must not have went to the right place to start with.

How do I get to where you showed me on your previous message?

I know, I know...you are thrilled with dealing with a computer dummy. wacko.gif
